“So what now?”
Elliot closed the notebook.
“This diary doesn’t prove Martin’s guilt.”
“And it doesn’t prove what your grandfather did either.”
“No.”
Grace shook her head.
Her eyes were clearer than they had ever been.
“This diary can shatter my grandfather’s delusions. And once they’re shattered…”
“I’ll find out what deal he really made with Martin.”
“Besides the so-called ‘restoring his reputation,’ there has to be something else.”
Grace swung her legs over the side of the bed.
“What are you doing?”
Elliot rushed to support her.
“The doctor said you can’t be on your feet!”
“I’m going back to the village.”
Grace gripped Elliot’s arm with surprising strength.
“I need to see my grandfather. Even if it’s in a detention center, I have to see him.”
“I have to ask him myself.”
“I want to see how his face burns with shame when he reads the words ‘You win some, you lose some’!”
“Grace, are you crazy?”
Elliot held her firmly.
“You’re in no condition to travel.”
“Besides, Damien’s men are right outside.”
At the mention of Damien’s name, Grace froze.
Right.
Damien.
If he found out about all this…
What would he do?
“Elliot.”
Grace looked up, her gaze determined.
“Do me a favor.”
“Anything. I’d go through fire and water for you.”
“You won’t have to.”
Grace pointed to the wheelchair nearby.
“Push me somewhere.”
“Where?”
“The Clarke family archives.”
Elliot’s jaw dropped.
“The archives are on the second basement level.”
“You think you can manage on your own?”
Grace nodded.
“Twenty minutes is enough.”
Since marrying Damien, she had been to the Clarke building often.
She knew the layout well enough.
The archives on sub-level two were where they stored old contracts and accounting records.
Almost no one ever went there.
Grace swiped the temporary access card Elliot had borrowed and got into the elevator smoothly.
The numbers descended.
With a soft chime, the elevator doors opened.
A blast of cold air hit her.
Grace shivered.
The archives required a password, as well as fingerprint and voice verification.
And Damien…
Grace bit her lower lip.
The day after they were married, that man had brought her to the Clarke building and entered all her information into the system.
Her clearance level was listed as 'Maximum'.
