Five Years Wasted Now They Beg Her Back novel Chapter 399

The video call was still connected.

"Grace, the family gene is a gift, but also a curse."

Melissa's fingers tapped a few keys, and an encrypted file was transferred to the computer.

Once the progress bar finished, a black pop-up window appeared.

On it was a red symbol of a scale. On one side of the scale was a dripping dagger.

"This symbol is called 'Nemesis,'" Melissa's voice dropped to a grim whisper. "They are the most mysterious biotech corporation in the world, and the ones responsible for driving your grandmother to her death."

Grace leaned against the headboard, feeling completely numb.

"They never gave up, did they?" Damien asked.

"Never," Melissa sighed. "Grace, I found out that the paper you recently published in a subsidiary journal of *Nature* about neuron regeneration has been red-flagged by an academic institution under Nemesis. Their data models detected the 'Dawn' signature in your research findings."

Grace's fingertips trembled as she clicked open the folder.

Inside was a stack of secretly taken photos.

The background of the photos was the abandoned backyard of the old Hart estate, and the dark, damp attic she had once lived in.

The timestamp read: three months ago.

"Three months ago, a group of unidentified individuals infiltrated the Hart estate," Melissa said, dropping another bombshell. "They were searching for anything your grandmother might have left for your mother. Grace, do you really think your mother's death was from complications during childbirth?"

Hearing this, Grace shot upright, but the sudden movement sent a violent wave of dizziness crashing over her, and she staggered, collapsing to the side.

"Grace!"

Damien moved before she could hit the floor, catching her firmly in his arms.

"Don't panic, listen to what Melissa has to say," Damien kissed her cold forehead, then turned to the screen, the murderous look in his eyes now completely undisguised. "Explain yourself. Clearly."

Melissa no longer held back. "After Lauren passed away, I had someone secretly extract some of her tissue samples. Although it's been a long time, current technology can detect trace residues."

"Her blood contained a rare neurotoxin. This toxin causes coagulation disorders, creating the false appearance of postpartum hemorrhage."

"What did you say…"

Grace curled up in Damien's arms, her hands instinctively shielding her stomach.

"Damien…"

"I'm here."

"My mother was poisoned. What about me?" Grace looked up, her eyes filled with shattered despair. "Do they want me to die, too?"

Damien's heart clenched.

"If anyone dares to lay a hand on you, I will utterly destroy them and everything they've ever built."

He took out his phone and dialed Felix's number.

"I want you to investigate this 'Nemesis.' I don't care what it costs, I want their roster."

After hanging up, Damien looked down at the small, trembling woman in his arms.

He reached out and gently wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes.
