"Why should they tell me to quit? On what grounds?"
"Is it just because I also have the damned blood of the Helix Line?"
Seeing her stubborn yet fragile look, Damien's heart ached for her.
"You're not quitting."
He promised her through gritted teeth. "As long as I'm here, no one can force you to do anything you don't want to."
"Bullshit Shepherd, bullshit Nemesis Group Inc. Even if God himself came down, he'd have to get through me first to touch you!"
"But…"
Grace's voice trembled. "They said Nemesis Group Inc. would make a move. I don't care if it's just against me, but I'm still pregnant with…"
It was her and Damien's child.
It was the only gift she had been given after Ethan Ward's betrayal and her family's abandonment.
She couldn't risk it.
"Don't be afraid."
Damien's hand gently stroked her back. "If we can't trace him, then we'll find someone who can."
He turned to Felix. "Contact Melissa."
"Establish a top-level encrypted channel. I want to have a good, long chat with this so-called 'Cleaner.'"
Felix nodded, drew the curtains, and opened his laptop.
Soon, the massive screen flickered with static for a few moments before Melissa's face appeared.
"Mr. Clarke, Grace."
"I was just about to contact you. I didn't expect you to reach out first."
A chill ran through Grace's body.
"So, in their eyes, I'm not a person."
She pointed at herself, laughing mockingly. "So in their eyes, I’m not a person. I’m just some walking, biological anomaly that needs to be erased, is that it?"
"Like a bug in a computer program that needs to be formatted and deleted?"
"Grace…" Melissa looked pained. "When your grandmother fled the family, she took core data with her. To the family, this was a great betrayal. The Shepherd has always believed that it was your mother who caused Nemesis Group Inc. to become interested in the family."
"Bullshit!"
Damien slammed his hand on the table, making the coffee cup jump.
"That was Grace's own grandmother! She just wanted to live a normal life, how did that become a betrayal?"
"You bunch of old fossils can rot in your own little world for all I care, but how dare you sling mud at a victim?"
