Five Years Wasted Now They Beg Her Back novel Chapter 514

The light above the emergency room door finally went out.

The attending physician walked out.

Grace swallowed hard but couldn’t bring herself to stand up.

Damien glanced at her and walked over.

“Doctor, how is she?”

The doctor looked at the group of people before him, his gaze finally resting on Grace’s face.

He sighed and shook his head gently.

“I’m sorry, we did everything we could.”

“It was an acute extensive anterior myocardial infarction. The damage was too widespread, and given her advanced age… by the time she arrived, her heart had already…”

Grace couldn’t hear the rest of what the doctor said.

She felt as if she were in an infinite fall, her whole being dizzy and numb.

Grace stood there for a long, long time without moving.

She didn’t cry either.

She just stood there quietly, her eyes empty.

“Grace…”

Ivy covered her mouth, tears instantly streaming down her face.

“How could this happen… I just saw her last week.” Her voice broke into a choked, heart-wrenching sob.

Her heart ached for the kind old woman, but it ached even more for Grace.

In this world, no one knew better than her that losing her grandmother would tear a huge piece out of Grace’s heart.

Damien stood to the side, watching Grace, also saying nothing.

“Grace.”

He called to her in a low voice.

Grace blinked numbly.

“I’m not crying.”

She heard her own voice, as calm as an outsider’s. “Grandma hated it when I cried.”

Damien’s eyes instantly reddened.

“Okay, we won’t cry.”

He took a deep breath, forcing down the lump in his throat, and turned to the butler.

“Zeke.”

“Sir…” The butler was still blaming himself.

“Do you think… people have souls after they die?”

Grace’s voice was ethereal, very soft, and very helpless.

Damien’s heart clenched violently.

He had always been a man of cold logic, believing not in gods or spirits, but in power and strategy.

But at this moment, he wished more than anything that ghosts and gods were real.

“Yes.”

Damien answered with conviction. “Grandma was so kind. She must have gone to a very good place. She’ll be watching over you from heaven.”

“Is that so…”

Grace forced a smile. “If she’s watching me, she’d probably scold me. Scold me for not being a good granddaughter, for always making her worry, for… not even being there for her at the very end.”

“It’s not your fault.”

Damien turned her face towards him, forcing her to look at him. “Grace, listen to me, this is not your fault. Life and death are beyond our control. It’s the natural cycle of things.”

Grace didn’t say any more.

The car soon arrived at the hillside villa.

Damien carried Grace out of the car and directly up to the second-floor bedroom.

Ivy didn’t follow. She knew that at this moment, what Grace needed wasn’t comfort, but companionship—a silent, powerful support.
