"Heh..."
One of the officials walked over, urging impatiently, "Ms. Shum, please cooperate."
"Cooperate?"
Serena slammed her phone on the desk. "You want to ruin me? It's not that easy! If I'm going down, I'm taking every last one of you with me!"
She shoved the official aside, rushed to the safe behind her desk, and pulled out a black burner phone.
"What are you doing?" The official sensed something was wrong and tried to stop her.
But Serena had already dialed the overseas number.
The phone rang once, twice, three times...
It connected.
A lazy male voice came through the receiver.
"Who is this?"
Serena swallowed hard, her voice filled with desperation as she shouted:
"I want to see Julian! Right now! Otherwise, I'm sending the books from your Verstein laundry operation to Damien!"
The line went silent for a few seconds.
Then, a soft chuckle.
The man didn't seem angry at all, simply saying one word, "Fine."
*Click.*
The line went dead.
Serena collapsed into her chair, her body limp.
She wouldn't have contacted that person unless it was a last resort.
But she had no other choice.
She had to take the gamble.

The next evening.
"Alright, stop the theatrics."
Serena set down her wine glass and dabbed the blood from her lip with a napkin. "I don't care what you do, you have to protect me! You handle the prosecutor's office. And as for Damien, you figure out a way to make him back off!"
"Do you think I'm a miracle worker?"
Julian seethed. "Grace's grandmother just died. He's looking for someone to take his anger out on, and you want me to handle him?"
"That's not my problem."
Serena threw up her hands. "I've only got one life to lose. If you don't save me, I'll drag you down with me. Neither of us will get out of this unscathed."
Julian took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down.
"Fine."
Julian closed his eyes. "I'll pull some strings at the prosecutor's office to delay the proceedings. But Damien..."
He paused, a sinister glint in his eyes. "Since he doesn't want us to have it easy, let's give him something to worry about."
"What are you planning to do?" Serena asked.
Julian sneered. "She cares about more than just her family. She also cares about her career."
