"Unless there's some hidden truth we don't know about yet."
Seeing that Grace was finally listening, Damien breathed a sigh of relief. He lowered his head and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead.
"Stop blaming yourself for everything. You've been through enough."
Grace leaned against him, staying silent for a long time.
He was right. She wasn't alone anymore.
She had Damien, and she had Gianna.
Why did she still care so much about what happened in the past?
Frustrated with herself, she knocked a fist against her own head.
Damien saw it but didn't say a word.
His silly girl was just too easily swayed by outsiders, always jumping at shadows.
"Okay." Grace took a deep breath. "I don't want to guess anymore. I'm going to investigate."
"It's the only way to clear my mother's name."
Damien smiled, pleased to see her fighting spirit return.
"That's my wife."
He grabbed the car keys from the table, twirling them around his finger.
"Let's go."
"Where?" Grace paused.
"Didn't you say you wanted to investigate?" Damien arched an eyebrow. "The archives from Apex University back then might be old, but they aren't impossible to find."
"I remember my grandfather and the former headmaster of Apex University were chess buddies for years."
"Since that useless Cassian can't find anything, your husband will just have to pull some strings for you."
Grace was speechless.
He sounded entirely too casual about it, but... it made her feel incredibly safe.
The car cruised smoothly down the tree-lined avenue heading toward the suburbs.
Damien had the air conditioning turned down low, so he draped a thin blanket over Grace's legs.
"Are you cold?" he asked, glancing at her during a red light.
"No," Grace shook her head.
Honestly, she was a little chilly, but she couldn't bear to take the blanket off.
The feeling of being so carefully cherished was too intoxicating to give up.
