By the time they left the Zollinger residence, night had fully descended.
The sky was gloomy, perfectly matching Grace's mood.
"Don't be afraid," Damien said softly. "No matter what we find out, we will get answers."
Grace sniffled and nodded.
"Damien."
"Yeah?" Damien started the car, steering with one hand.
"If... I mean, if Cassian really is Silas's son, then my brother..." Grace trailed off, unsure of what to say.
"Then he should be counting his lucky stars."
Damien smirked. "Being Silas's son is infinitely better than being the spawn of that old bastard Alistair. Silas might not be a saint, but at least the man has a functioning brain. If Cassian had taken after Alistair, he would've spent his entire life as nothing but an incompetent coward who only talks tough at home."
Grace was speechless.
It was harsh, but she couldn't exactly argue with his logic.
"Keep this from Cassian for now," Damien added, glancing at her. "That idiot has terrible mental fortitude. Telling him will only ruin things. Let's figure out the full story first, then decide what to do."
"Okay," Grace agreed, leaning exhaustedly against the headrest.
The scenery outside the window blurred past like the rushing tides of time.
She closed her eyes, Quentin's words echoing relentlessly in her mind.
If her mother's research had gone so deep, why did she completely abandon it?
Or had her mother already discovered the truth about the Helix Line back then?
Could Silas have ties to the Helix Line?
At that thought, Grace's heart inexplicably hammered against her ribs.
A sickening sense of dread suddenly crawled over her.
"What's wrong?" Damien noticed her abrupt shift in demeanor.
"Damien, drive faster."
Grace gripped his right arm, her expression fraught with panic. "I want to see Gianna. I want to go home and see Gianna!"
The suffocating panic grew stronger by the second, making it impossible to sit still.
"Got it."
Damien didn't ask questions. He slammed his foot on the gas, and the car tore through the night.
He managed to cut the forty-minute drive down to twenty.
