With the agreement made, the tension coiling inside Grace instantly snapped.
Her vision went dark, her legs felt weak, and her body swayed uncontrollably.
Damien's expression darkened.
He shot out an arm and caught her steadily by the elbow just a second before she would have fallen.
“Careful.”
His voice was still deep, but it held a new note of concern.
The man's hand was hot and strong. The warmth made Grace's body tremble slightly.
She immediately pulled her arm away and took a small step back. “I’m fine.”
Damien's outstretched hand froze in mid-air.
He looked at her pale face, but in the end, he simply retracted his hand without a word.
“Sit down.”
He gestured with his chin toward the nearby sofa.
Grace pressed her lips together but didn't argue.
Her current physical state didn't allow for false pride.
She did as he said, sitting on the farthest corner of the sofa, her back ramrod straight.
Damien watched her defensive posture but said nothing more.
He turned, took an unopened bottle of mineral water from the mini-bar, twisted it open, and handed it to her.
“Drink some water.”
Grace hesitated for a moment before taking it.
Her lips were indeed terribly chapped.
“Thank you.”
She said quietly, taking small sips of water.
Damien stood there, looking down at her.
His gaze made her feel incredibly uncomfortable.
After finishing the water, she placed the bottle on the coffee table and looked up to meet his eyes.
Grace sat on the sofa, her hands resting awkwardly on her knees, unsure of where to even look.
She and Damien were hardly familiar with each other.
Aside from a glimpse in a business magazine and a few brief, nodding encounters, they had almost no connection.
Yet this man, practically a stranger, had extended a helping hand when she was at her most defeated and desperate.
He not only saved her but even… proposed a partnership.
It all felt like an unreal dream.
She was still in a daze.
She couldn't understand why he would help her.
Was it for her talent? The prestige of the Hart family name? Her supposed “beauty”?
Those reasons sounded plausible, but Grace didn’t believe a word of it.
With Damien’s status, what kind of partner couldn’t he find?
He had absolutely no reason to place such a big bet on a disgraced “cast-off wife.”
