After having such a hectic afternoon, Abril was sleeping deeply, and Alessandro kept watch over her. He’d only been away for a few days, but they felt like an eternity to him; it was getting harder and harder for him to be away from her.

Alessandro loathed the idea of starting a war. He knew that when that happened, he would have to be on the battlefield for a long time, and although at first, he had thought of using Abril’s power to win the war, he no longer thought that way. The very thought of Abril on the battlefield, surrounded by death, terrified him because he could no longer imagine a life without her.

But the war was imminent. Alessandro knew they had to put an end to King Venobich before he continued unleashing more horrors in his kingdom. What Alessandro didn’t understand was why

King Venobich was conducting his experiments in his kingdom; he should have known Alessandro would find out and be ready for what was coming, or perhaps that was just a small part, the leftovers he didn’t need, and what was coming would be even worse.

Alessandro got up from the bed, and when he did, Abril woke up and asked him.

Where are you going?

I was going to get something to eat.

Abril glanced out the window; it was already pitch dark. She sat up in bed, pulling the sheet around

her, and asked.

Did we miss dinner?

I think so. Are you hungry?

Yes.

Alessandro gently kissed her lips and said.

I’ll go ask them to bring us dinner. I’ll be right back.

Don’t take long.

Don’t worry, I won’t.”

After Alessandro left, Abril got out of bed, went to the wardrobe, and took out a white silk nightgown. Then she went out to the balcony, and a soft, fresh breeze caressed her face. She lingered, gazing at the garden; it looked beautiful, the moonflowers glowed beautifully.

She let out a heavy sigh; her journey was nearing its end. The next day she would be returning to the royal palace, something she wasn’t eager to do. For the first time, she’d ventured beyond the

palace walls, for the first time she had tasted what freedom was, and for the first time, she wished her newfound freedom wouldn’t be snatched away; she wondered how long she would spend locked behind the palace walls before going out again.

I’m getting selfish.

Alessandro had returned to the room and had heard what Abril had said.

Why do you say that?

You’re back.

Alessandro came over, wrapped his arms around her, and asked again.

Why do you say you’re getting selfish?

Because even though I had nothing before, now I want more things.

You know you can ask for whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you.

I know.

Then why don’t you tell me what you want?

I

Come on, say it, tell me what you desire.

Could we choose not to return to the palace?

Don’t you want to go back?

It’s not that I don’t want to return. It’s just that this is the first time I’m outside, where my eyes can look to the horizon without limits. I wish this could last a little longer.

I can’t give you that. I’d love to keep traveling with you and show you new places, but as a king, I

have a responsibility to my people. I’m bound to them.

I know, and that’s why I said I’m selfish, because even though I know you can’t abandon your

duties as king, I wish you would, that you’d always be with me.

Alessandro kissed her, and as he pulled away, he gently caressed her hair and said.

Then I’m selfish too, for wanting the same thing as you.

Abril hugged him, Alessandro returned the embrace and said.

Sometimes I also wish I could be free of my obligations and relax by your side. But right now, that’s not possible for me. Soon a war will begin, and my duty is to fight in it to protect my

kingdom, its inhabitants, and above all, to protect you.

Abril pulled back a little to look Alessandro in the eyes and asked.

Will that war be against my father?

Alessandro didn’t want to lie, he replied.

That’s right. Your father has been unleashing beasts created by darkness in my kingdom, and I’m sure that’s just the beginning. That’s why we must attack before he gets stronger, before it’s too late and he plunges everything into chaos, filled with violence and darkness.

She lowered her gaze and said.

My father is a bad man. I don’t want him to destroy your kingdom, much less its inhabitants. So, I also want to help you in this war.

No, when the war begins, everything will be in chaos, with death and blood everywhere. I don’t want you to see that.

All the more reason to let me help you, so I can use my power to heal the wounded.

No, it’s too dangerous for others to find out about your powers. Your mother thinks the same, which is why she told you to hide your magic. So for now, we’ll keep it a secret.”

But

At least until the right moment arrives.
