Cassian watched Maya, who was sleeping peacefully beside him, but he couldn’t fall asleep. He was nervous. Maya turned over and draped her arm across his abdomen. Cassian felt his heart

race, from having her so close. In the end, he couldn’t take it anymore, he got out of bed, placed a pillow on the floor, and settled down to sleep.

The next day, when Maya woke up and saw him sleeping on the floor, she gently shook his

shoulder to wake him and asked, “What are you doing sleeping on the floor? Don’t tell me you fell

out of bed.”

“Of course not, it’s just that the bed wasn’t comfortable.”

“And the floor was more comfortable?”

Cassian stood up and replied, “Yes, it’s better for the back.”

“If you insist.”

Cassian brushed off his clothes and said, “I’ll go order breakfast for us.”

As he left the room, Cassian covered his face with his hand, feeling embarrassed that Maya had seen him sleeping on the floor. One of the guards who was on duty in the hallway approached him and asked, “Prince Cassian, are you alright?”

“Yes, I’m fine.”

Cassian composed himself and asked, “Do you know if my brother is already awake?”

“Yes, a moment ago he ordered us to prepare the carriage and horses; we’ll leave after breakfast.”

“Then I’ll go order my breakfast; I’m sure we won’t take long to leave.”

“If you want, I can go order your breakfast for you.”

“Thanks, but I’d prefer to go myself; it’ll help clear my head.”

Cassian headed to the inn’s tavern, approached the bar, and asked the innkeeper to send breakfast to the room. On his way back to the room, he was surprised to see Ethan, the elf they had met at

the information guild.

Instinctively, he hid and asked himself what that man was doing there. He kept watching for a moment until a guard approached him. It was Rafael, who said,

“Prince Cassian, His Majesty has summoned you.”

Cassian did not respond, his gaze fixed on Ethan. Rafael followed the prince’s gaze and, upon

seeing a blond man with golden eyes in the tavern, said,

“What could that man be doing here?”

“Do you know him?”

“The blond man with golden eyes?”

“Yes, do you know him?”

“I don’t really know him, but he approached Her Majesty Abril when we escorted her into town.”

“What did he say?”

“He called Her Majesty Sophia. I think he mistook her for someone else.”

“Let’s go back, and don’t approach that man.”

“As you wish, Prince Cassian.”

Cassian went to find his brother. He knocked on the door insistently, and when it opened,

Alessandro asked,

“What’s wrong, Cas?”

“I need to talk to you.”

Seeing him so anxious made Alessandro worried.

“Has something happened?”

“Aby, would you mind leaving us alone?”

“Of course.”

When Abril left, Cassian said,

“The elf I met at the information guild is here.”

“What?”

“I think he’s looking for Abril.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Apparently, he has already seen her.”

“We’d better talk alone.”

“Abril, I’ll be right back.”

After leaving the room, Alessandro and Cassian headed to Cassian’s room. Seeing the king, Maya

asked,

“What’s going on?”

“Could you give us a moment? I need to talk to my brother.”

“Of course.”

When Maya left the room, Cassian said.

“The elf I met at the guild of information is here.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, apparently elves have a unique characteristic, their golden eyes; they can’t hide them even with magic. I’m sure it was him, and I think he’s looking for Abril.”

“Why would he be looking for her? He doesn’t even know her.”

“You’re wrong about that. It seems when Abril went for a walk in the town where she picked up Otis and Joe, he saw her. She used magic to change her hair color, remember?”

“Yes.”

“That day, Abril mentioned she looked a lot like her mother with blonde hair, as if she were seeing herself in a mirror.”

“What are you getting at?”

“One of the guards who accompanied her that day told me that theman called Abril Sophia. That’s the name of Abril’s mother. I think he confused her and is now looking for her, thinking Abril is her

mother.”

Alessandro remained silent for a moment, and Cassian broke that silence by saying.

“I think the best thing would be for us to leave immediately. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but Maya told me that elves don’t let their descendants wander around since they consider them of noble blood. If they discover Abril’s identity, they might try to take her.”

“I won’t let them take her. I’ll stop anyone who tries to take my wife from me.”

“I wouldn’t let them take her either, but we must be cautious. It’s best if we leave quietly. We don’t know how much strength or power the elves possess. In reality, we don’t know anything about them. Starting a war with them isn’t wise, especially since we already have a powerful enemy to defeat; King Venobich.”

Alessandro knew his brother was right, that the best thing was to flee at that moment. He didn’t
