Traumatic Memories
When Alessandro finished his work, it was already late. Abril had already gone to rest in her room. He went directly there, and when he entered, he was surprised to see Abril by the door. He asked her,
“Are you going somewhere?”
“Yes, I was going to look for you.”
“Is something wrong?”
“I’ve been thinking about how to help in this war. I can bless the weapons to fight against the creatures of darkness.”
“And do you know how to do it?”
“I think I do, although I’m not very sure.”
Alessandro took Abril by the waist, gently caressed her cheek, and said,
“I understand how you feel, but you don’t have to force yourself to do anything.”
“But we need weapons to fight against the darkness.”
“And we will have them. Yesterday, the elves told us that warriors from their kingdom would come with weapons blessed by the light. Your powers have awakened very recently. Don’t push yourself too hard. We don’t know what your limit might be, since your power hasn’t yet broken all the seals that contain your magic.”
“And when will they arrive?”
“They should arrive in a few days.”
“But what if they don’t arrive? Or if we are attacked and don’t have weapons to defend ourselves?”
“That won’t happen, rest assured. Each day has its own problem, we’ll solve things when the time comes, stay calm.”
“But…”
“Let’s not think about that now, okay?”
“It’s just that I can’t. Every time I close my eyes, I remember what happened at the dance, the screams of terror and pain, the metallic smell of blood, the dead and the wounded, the

horrible monsters about to attack you, and the terror I felt at that moment seeing your life in danger. I love you so much, Lessan, that just thinking I could have lost you, my heart shatters into a thousand pieces.”
Alessandro leaned in and captured Abril’s lips with a kiss. His kiss was strong, yet kind, sweet, and tender. He continued kissing her, claiming her lips as his own for a good while, preventing her from uttering a word. He kept kissing her until all the anxiety and fear Abril feft disappeared. When he parted his lips, she was panting, her cheeks were flushed, and her lips slightly swollen. He said to her,
“I’m here with you, Aby. You’re not going to lose me. I know what we went through can be traumatic for you, but don’t be afraid. I’m here and I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be by your side at all times. I’ve already promised you, do you remember?”
She placed her hand on his chest, she could feel the beats of his heart, his heavy breathing, which made her heart feel calmer. She lifted her gaze, her golden eyes locked onto his.
“It’s just that I can’t imagine a life without you, a future where you’re not by my side. When I think I could lose you, I can’t help but fill my heart with fear and anxiety. If something happened to you, I…”
Alessandro kissed her again, a short kiss that was really just a brush, but that kiss, the warmth of his lips, calmed Abril once more.
“Aby, don’t fret about the future, or you’ll lose sight of the present. Let’s take it one day at a time, let’s live each moment and each instant that we have each other.”
Abril wrapped her arms around Alessandro’s neck and kissed him. She wanted to keep feeling his kisses, his caresses. She wanted to feel him with all her being, for every part of her body to show her that they were together, that what was to come didn’t matter. What mattered was that at that precise moment they were together and loved each other fiercely.
After a long kiss, Alessandro took Abril in his arms and carried her to the bed. Their lips met passionately. That night, they made love, united their bodies, and became one. Their union was not only in body but also in soul. They told each other with every kiss and caress that they belonged to one another. They forgot everything that worried them, everything that had been tormenting them. At that moment, it felt like they were the only two people in the world.

Maya and Cassian were lying in bed but couldn’t sleep. Ethan had come to see them and had told them they should be alert, that although they were being treated as guests, the truth was they weren’t. They were just undesirables who had intruded without prior notice. From the bed, one could see the starry sky. Maya stared at it intently, she was amazed. There, the sky

looked more beautiful, the moon seemed to shine more splendidly, and the stars looked like small diamonds. There were so many that it was impossible to count them. Cassian put his arm around her waist and asked her,
“Are you asleep?”
“No, and after what Ethan said, I doubt I will.”
“I don’t think I can sleep either.
Maya placed her hand on Cassian’s and said,
“Thank you.”
“Why are you thanking me?”
“I’m grateful for the day you let me come with you. Because of you, I’ve been able to see and experience amazing things.”
“You know I had no choice but to take you with me that day, right?”
“Yeah, I know, but even if I had kept insisting, you would’ve just left me when I went to grab my stuff, but you didn’t; you waited for me.”
“You’re right, I don’t know why I didn’t think of that back then.”
Cassian rested his chin on her shoulder, intertwined his fingers with hers, and said,
“But I’m glad I didn’t think of it at the time, or I wouldn’t have been here with you.”
Maya turned to face him, and when she met his gaze, she saw something in his eyes that made her feel vulnerable, that made the wall she’d built between them crumble. She didn’t know if it was true or just her imagination, but she wanted to know, so she asked,
“Do you love me?”
Cassian was surprised; honestly, he didn’t even know what he felt for Maya, but he did know
that he wanted to be with her.
“Honestly, I don’t know. I just know I want to be with you. Do you love me?”
Maya didn’t answer; she knew the answer but refused to say it, knowing there could never be a future for them. She kissed him, sidestepping his question.
“I think we should try to get some sleep; who knows what tomorrow will bring?”
Cassian realized that Maya had avoided his question, but he didn’t want to force her to
