Attack in the Dark

Enzo was in his quarters recovering from the wound he had suffered when he attacked the kingdom of Cosset. Since that day, he hadn’t left his room, not wanting to appear weak in front of his sister, she was like a hyena waiting for the right moment to strike. She had always been someone to watch out for, but in recent days it was impossible for him to sleep peacefully. He feared what she might be plotting, and that worried him greatly, he was afraid of what she might be planning.

Someone knocked on the door. When he heard his sister’s voice behind the door, his whole body tensed. Instinctively, he reached for the sword he always wore strapped to his waist and never parted with.

Enzo, it’s Cira. Can I come in?

What do you want?

Cira opened the door without his permission and said with a mocking expression.

Don’t think I’ve come to see you because I’m worried about you. I only came because our father sent me to fetch you.

For what?

I don’t know, and I didn’t ask either. I just followed our father’s orders, so let’s go, or do you want me to tell him you’ve refused to go?

And how can I know that what you’re saying is true? You could be leading me into a trap.

Believing me or not is your decision. I’m just following orders.

And why didn’t a servant come? Since when did you become our father’s messenger?

Because where I’m taking you, only the royal family can enter. You must know which place I’m referring to.

In the entire kingdom of Laios, there was only one place where only members of the royal family, the Venobich, were allowed entry. He had no way of knowing if what his sister was saying was true or not, and although all his senses told him to stay away from his sister, if what she said was true, he would be in serious trouble if he refused to go, so he decided to follow her. As he left the room, his sister said to him.

I knew you weren’t so foolish as to disobey our father.

Cira turned around, and as she walked, she said.

Come on, you don’t want to keep our father waiting. You know how little his patience is.

Enzo walked a few steps behind his sister, afraid to turn his back on her and ending up being stabbed with his own sword. She led him to the deepest part of the palace, and they stopped

in front of a black door locked with a key.

The door is locked. How do you plan to open it?

Cira took out a key hanging around her neck and replied irritably.

With the key, of course.

Enzo frowned and asked.

Where did you get it from? It’s supposed to be that only our father has the key to this door.

And it was, until yesterday. Our father decided to entrust me with the key to this door.

Why would he entrust something so important to you?

Perhaps because our father considers me his heir.

I am the heir, the next king of the kingdom of Laios.

If you’re so sure, why are you getting upset?

Cira replied as she inserted the key into the lock.

Are you afraid it might not be so?

What nonsense. I’m the eldest, I will be the heir.

I’m not so sure. Our older sister was discarded as an heir, I wouldn’t be surprised if the same happened to you.

Enzo was about to reply when Cira opened the door; a cold air hit them, inside it was dark, the darkness was as thick as ink. Both felt a shiver run through their bodies, but neither would admit that the place was terrifying and gloomy to them. Cira, wanting to appear brave, stepped forward, used her fire to light the way, and there was a spiral staircase. Enzo hesitated for a moment before entering.

What’s wrong, brother? Don’t tell me you’re scared?

Of course not. Let’s go.

Both entered and began to descend the spiral staircase. When they reached the bottom, they

both felt as if there was something in the darkness watching them.

You said our father was here. I don’t see him anywhere.

I’m just following his orders, I’m just as in the dark as you are.

Both continued walking in the darkness as the fire illuminated. Enzo made a flame appear in his hand to light the place more, but there wasn’t much difference, that darkness didn’t diminish. Enzo heard the sound of claws scratching the floor.

Did you hear that?

I’m not deaf; of course I heard it.

Enzo drew his sword and stood on guard, Cira took out two daggers she had strapped to her waist and said to him.

You better not attack me, or I swear you won’t leave this place alive.

I’m not stupid enough to attack you in this situation.

Cira hurled a fireball towards the source of the clawscratching sound, and she was surprised to see a grotesque creature with sharp claws heading towards them.

I think we should leave this place.

Didn’t you say that our father summoned us?

You don’t get it, do you? So, how about we get out of here before we both end up dead and miss out on the throne?

The clawing sounds grew nearer, and they both backed away in terror. Just before reaching the spiral staircase, the creature lunged at Cira, knocking her to the ground. She screamed, using her two daggers to keep the jaws of the terrifying creature at bay, desperately calling out to her brother for help.

Enzo, help me.

Enzo hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to help her, but in the end, he couldn’t let her die. He drew his sword, ignited it with flames, and swiftly beheaded the creature. Cira stepped back, nearly trembling, and said.

I didn’t think you would save me.

Honestly, neither did I.

Enzo extended his hand to her and said,

Let’s go, before more of those creatures appear.

Cira got to her feet and began to retreat with Enzo. He was in front, and she was behind. After climbing two steps, she felt something grab her leg, pulling her down. Cira screamed and clung to Enzo’s hand. He nearly fell when she grabbed him, but steadied himself on the railing and asked.

What’s wrong?

When Enzo turned around, he saw that Cira was being swallowed by the darkness. He tried to hold onto her to stop the darkness from swallowing her, but ultimately, he couldn’t, and the darkness engulfed her completely.
