Sirius stared at those silver flames and approached to see them better. He was surprised to find that the flames weren’t hot; he touched them and didn’t get burned.

“What kind of flames are these? I’ve never seen them before.”

“I just tried to do what Liam did, but I guess it didn’t work.”

“Wait, what were the words you said?”

“Purifying fire, may your flames cleanse and restore the body. Wait, I think it was destroy,l got

confused.”

Sirius put his hands into the fire, but once again, those silver flames did nothing to him.

“I guess I failed.”

“I don’t think so, but I didn’t know you could use fire magic.”

“I just did what you told me.”

“I don’t know if I explained it to you, but wizards and magic bearers are not the same. Wizards can use all types of magic, but magic bearers have only one magical attribute: earth, water, air or fire. Even with enchantments, they can’t change their attributes or use other types of magic. But you’re an exception. Abril touched her hair and said,

After that day, Abril continued studying hard to control her magic. After two months, she memorized all the magic books in the tower and learned to control her magic perfectly. She was at the tower’s door waiting for the response to the letter she had sent to Alessandro; Sirius

approached her and asked,

“What are you doing here?”

“I sent a letter to Lessan, I’m waiting for his response.”

“You always exchange letters, but why do you seem so anxious today?”

“I asked if I could go back to the palace. I’ve learned to control my magic, so there’s nothing left for

me to do here.”

Abril saw the messenger arrive. She ran to meet him, eager to quickly read Alessandro’s response.

“Where’s my letter?”

“I’m sorry, Miss Amara, I don’t have any letters for you today.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Check again, there must be a letter for me.”

The postman checked his bag and said,

“I’m sorry, Miss Amara, but I really don’t have any letters for you. I only have a letter for the tower’s

owner.”

Sirius approached and took the letter the postman was carrying. Abril saw the seal of the Veriatte royal family on the envelope and asked,

“Why has Lessan sent you a letter and not me?”

Sirius put the letter in the pocket of his cloak and said,

“I think you’re mistaken, this letter wasn’t sent by him.”

Sirius began to walk away, but Abril followed him.

“I’ve seen the seal on the letter, I’m sure it’s from Lessan.”

“It’s not from him.”

“Then why did you hide the letter?”

“Then show me what the letter says.”

“I can’t do that, it’s confidential.”

“You know who I am. If it’s a state secret, I can read it.”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t reveal the letter’s contents to you.”

Abril had a slight suspicion of why Sirius didn’t want to show her that letter and why Alessandro hadn’t responded to her letter.

“He doesn’t want me to return, does he? That’s why he hasn’t replied to my letter, he’s probably forgotten about me.”

“Then, why hasn’t he come to find me?”

“He wants you to be prepared.”

Sirius had no way to refute Abril’s words; she was a true genius, memorizing books just by reading them once. What took others years to master, Abril accomplished in two months.

“Perhaps it’s still not enough. You’ve only been in the tower for two months, there are still many things you need to improve, like self–defense, for example.”

“What?”

“Yes, I think you should learn to defend yourself. Remember the war will start soon.”

“Doesn’t learning to control my magic count for anything?”

“No, since that would only be useful against monsters, but is useless against humans.”

“Your magic only heals or nullifies other spells; you can’t defend yourself with it.”

“I suppose you’re right, but I really miss him. I thought I could finally see him again.”

After saying that, Abril started to walk away, and as she did, she wondered if Lessan missed her the same way she missed him or if being apart for so long meant nothing. That day, she returned to her room and cried for a long time, wondering if she would ever see him again or if she was destined to become a forgotten wife once more.

Clutching her pillow, she whispered through her tears.
