Duke Vampel was in his study drinking when suddenly a shadow appeared; it was Enzo, the prince
of the kingdom of Laios. The duke bowed before him and said:
“Prince Enzo, to what do I owe the honor of your visit?”
“Did you do what I ordered?”
“Yes, I delivered the seed of darkness just as you ordered me.”
“Did you see my sister?”
“Yes, and I felt nothing upon seeing her; I don’t believe she possesses magic.”
“I suspected as much.”
“Did you recruit an army as I ordered you?”
“I have gathered several mercenaries who are willing to betray the kingdom for a good amount of
money.”
“Keep recruiting more soldiers for your army and make sure to keep a low profile; I wouldn’t want you to be discovered.”
“I will, Prince Enzo. When is the attack planned?”
“Soon, so you must be prepared.”
“Prince, when the kingdom is conquered, will I receive my reward?”
“Of course, if everything goes well, I will give you what you deserve.”

It was midnight, Alessandro was heading to his room to try to sleep, but he doubted he could do so without Abril by his side. When he opened the door, he saw the shadow of a man in his room. He immediately reached for his sword, but then the man spoke, and he recognized his voice; it was
Taren.
“Your Majesty, please don’t attack me.”
“What are you doing here, Taren?”
“I have come to report something I discovered.”
Alessandro turned on a light, sat on the sofa, and said:
“Speak quickly.”
“I have investigated Duke Vampel and discovered that he has been hiring mercenaries and has

created a small army.”
“Do you know if he has been in contact with anyone from the kingdom of Laios?”
“I haven’t seen anyone enter his mansion, and Duke Vampel rarely leaves his house; I’ve been watching him day and night, but I haven’t seen him having any secret meetings.”
“I see. I want you to infiltrate some of your men among the mercenaries and report their
movements to me.”
“I will do so.”
Taren headed to the door, and before leaving, Alessandro said to him.
Clairt
“Taren, be very careful. I’m sure Duke Vampel is connected to the kingdom of Laios; he is a traitor. Don’t do anything reckless.”
“I’ll remember that.”
Taren left him alone, and Alessandro laid down on the sofa, wondering what Abril was doing at that moment, if she was thinking about him and missing him as much as he missed her. Alessandro fell asleep thinking about Abril, and that night he had nightmares that disturbed him throughout, nightmares he hadn’t had since he started sleeping with Abril. He woke up in a cold sweat and looked around. When he saw he was in his room, he felt more at ease and able to breathe again. He took a deep breath and then reminded himself.
“You are in the palace, not on the battlefield; the war has not yet begun.”

After arriving at the mages‘ tower, Abril dedicated herself to memorizing books on the principles of magic, and she also memorized several spells. She wanted to put them into practice, so she went to look for Sirius. One of the mages had told her that Sirius was in the north courtyard supervising the novice mages. Abril was surprised to find that all the novices were children aged 6
to 7.
When Sirius saw Abril arrive, he approached her, asking.
“What are you doing here?”
“I was looking for you.”
“Do you have any questions you’d like me to clarify?
“No, actually, I would like to start practicing using my magic. I’ve tried doing it on my own, but it hasn’t gone very well.”
“At the moment, I’m with the novices. If you want, you can watch how they do it and try to do the same as them.”

“That sounds good to me.”
Abril approached the children and introduced herself.
“Hello, I’m Amara. I’ll be here today. I hope I’m not a bother.”
The children introduced themselves one by one.
“Hello Amara, I’m Liam.”
Replied a blond–haired boy.
“I’m Teodor, but everyone calls me Teo.”
Said another boy with black hair and hazel eyes.
“I’m Latifa.”
Said a girl with brown hair and black eyes.
“My name is Nera,” a girl with dark blonde hair and blue eyes said.
She seemed to be the youngest of them all. After everyone introduced themselves, Sirius said to
them.
“Since everyone has introduced themselves, go back to what you were doing.”
Liam was the first to resume what he was doing; he raised a wooden wand high and began to
recite some words.
“Crimson fire, may your flames be true and destroy what they touch.”
A burst of fire shot from the wand, striking a straw dummy in front of him and reducing it to ashes.
The other children did likewise, using various objects to channel their magic and reciting different spells. When everyone had done so, Sirius congratulated them and told them to keep up the good work. Then he approached Abril and said,
“All these children have discovered their magical powers recently. That’s why they use spells and objects to channel their magic. You could do the same. Although you are not a mage, you are a bearer of light. Therefore, you will need to create your own spells.
“What words should I use?”
“You can use whichever ones you want, just ensure they express what you want your magic to achieve, what you want to do with it. For example, if it’s to heal someone, express that with your words, and if you wish to attack, you can do that too, just put strength and conviction in your
words.”
“But I don’t have any object to channel my magic.”

“You can also use your hands. Cassian channels his magic that way; he touches a seed and makes a tree sprout or touches the ground directly. Magic is versatile, you can shape it as you wish.“.
“All right, I’ll try.”
Abril stood in front of one of the training dummies, closed her eyes, and searched for the right words. She wanted to do something similar to what Liam had done.
“Purifying fire, may your flames cleanse and restore the body.”
After saying that, silver flames emerged from her hand, surrounding the dummies with those flames, yet they did not seem to cause any harm.
Nera had never seen silver flames before. She approached Abril and said,
“Those flames are beautiful. I’ve never seen flames like that.”
Sirius said,
“Children, the training is over for today. Return to the tower.”
“But…”
Nera replied.
“It’s an order. Return to the tower.”
Nera knew she couldn’t disobey the tower master’s rules, so even though she didn’t want to leave, she obeyed and marched along with the other children.
