My Other Half

After crying for a good while, Abril wiped her tears and ran to Sirius’s office. She burst through the door, startling Sirius. He threw the papers he was holding into the air and said, “What are you doing? You nearly scared me to death.”
“I want to learn to fight.”
“What?”
“You said I needed to learn to defend myself to be able to return, so I want to learn to fight.”
“What exactly do you wish to learn?”
“Something I can learn in a short time.”
“Why don’t you go to the wizards‘ training room and decide what you want to learn?”
“I suppose that’s a good idea.”
“It certainly is, so you should go immediately.”
“Yes, I’ll do that.”
In reality, Sirius didn’t care what Abril was going to learn; he just wanted her to stay occupied for a while and leave him in peace. He picked up the papers Abril had made him drop and focused on his work, forgetting about her.
After two months, with the arrival of winter, the war began. Alessandro marched to the border with his army and the army of elves.
When Abril found out that the war had started, she ran to Sirius’s office and entered without
knocking.
“Is it true that the war has already begun?”
“You know, there’s a reason this room has a door.”
“Answer my question.”
Sirius was organizing the wizards to go to the border and join the battle. The last thing he wanted at that moment was to deal with Abril. He sighed heavily and replied, “Yes, and that’s why I’m very busy. I would appreciate it if Your Majesty would stop wasting my time. I must prepare to march immediately to the battlefield.”
Sirius headed to the door, but Abril stood in the way blocking his path, and said, “I will go too.”
“Your Majesty has not given his permission…”
“I don’t care, I want to go. I’ve learned to defend myself; I won’t be defenseless on the battlefield.
My Other Half
Besides, my magic is more effective against those monsters.”
“I know, but your magic can also nullify our spells. If that were to happen, we would be defenseless.”
“That won’t happen. I’ve learned to control my power.”
“But…”
“If you won’t let me go with you, I’ll go on my own. Wouldn’t that be worse?”

Sirius didn’t have time to continue this dispute with Abril. He scratched his head and said to her.
“Fine, do as you wish, since you’ll do it regardless.”
“Then I’ll go prepare.”
Before she left, Sirius said to her.
“Wait.”
“If you’re going to try to convince me not to go…”
“It’s not that, I just wanted to remind you to keep being Amara.”
“I already know that.”
Abril went to her room and put on a brown robe like the ones the other mages would be wearing.
She joined the other mages in the courtyard, and Sirius said a few words.
“We are heading to the battlefield, everyone must be prepared and alert.”
Everyone shouted in unison.
“Yes, sir.”
Sirius activated a magic circle and everyone was transported to the battlefield.
When they arrived, Abril was horrified to see a pile of corpses behind them. The strong smell of blood and death hit her nose, causing her to feel nauseous. She covered her mouth with her hand. Sirius approached her and said,
“We were at peace for so many years that for a moment I forgot what war was like.”
Seeing Abril covering her mouth to escape the strong smell of blood in the air, and noticing her whole body trembling, Sirius said to her.
“You shouldn’t be in this place.”
Abril removed her hand from her mouth and nose, forced herself to come to her senses, and
replied.

“No, now more than ever/know this is where I need to be.”
In the distance, the screams and clashing of swords could be heard, along with the sight of
crimson flames and mong nying through the air At that moment, Abril recognized
Alessandro’s wind magic and knew where he was, at the front fighting against that horde of monsters and enemy soldiers.

unsure of what to do, until
Strine said to her.
“There are many wounded. You could help with that.”
“Of course.”

Abril saw the soldiers returning. Among them, she spotted Alessandro. Seeing him, she froze. She had always thought about what she would do when she saw him again, but at that mot she didn’t know what to do or say. She just stood there,
watching him from afar.
One of the mages approached her and shook her shoulder to get her attention.
“Amara, more wounded have arrived, some in critical condition. I need your help.”
Abril wanted to refuse and go to Alessandro, but she knew that wasn’t the moment. Knowing she had that power, she felt obliged to share it with others. She turned around and said in a barely
audible whisper.
“Just a little longer, soon I’ll be with you, my love.”
Sirius followed Alessandro to his tent. While Alessandro washed the blood from his face, hands,
and arms, he asked him.
“Are you injured, Your Majesty?”
“No, the blood’s not mine.”
Alessandro stared at his reflection in the water, his face covered in the blood of his enemies, and
said,
“This war is even worse than I had imagined.”
“It’s true, it seems even more brutal than the previous one.”
Alessandro splashed water on his face and said.
“I’m glad Abril isn’t here to see any of this.”
Sirius felt a chill run down his spine when Alessandro asked.

“How is she? It’s only been four months since I last saw her, but it feels like an eternity.”
“Well, the queen is… here.”
The last part Sirius had said so low that Alessandro hadn’t been able to hear it.
“Speak clearly. What has happened to my wife?”
Alessandro asked again with a face that said, “I’ll kill you if anything happens to my wife.”
Sirius swallowed. He was about to speak when a commotion was heard outside the tent; Alessandro went out and asked the soldiers nearby
“What’s happening?”
“Apparently, a monster has managed to cross the barrier. It’s attacking the camp.”
Alessandro went back to grab his sword from the tent and ran towards the screams. That monster was attacking the tents where the wounded were, he cursed.
“Damn it, why did it have to attack that place?”
All the gravely wounded were in those tents, unable to defend themselves from the attack, or so he thought. But when he arrived, he was surprised to see that one of the mages was fighting that
monster.
Silver flames surrounded that monster, making it shriek. That strange fire killed the monster. He approached the mage, who was strong and whose power was very effective against the monsters. Alessandro thought of taking them to the front the next day, but when he saw the face of the mage, his blood ran cold. The color of her hair was different, and without a doubt, that mage was his wife, Abril.
He stood there, staring at her, questioning if it was truly her or if he was just hallucinating from missing her so much. Abril met his gaze, and as soldiers rushed back and forth tending to the wounded, they stood still, locked in each other’s eyes. Abril was the first to approach, and when there was almost no distance between them, Alessandro remained motionless, staring at her as if he couldn’t believe she was there.
“After all this time apart, you have nothing to say? Aren’t you glad to see me?”
“You’re not real; you can’t be here.”
That wasn’t the response Abril expected; his reaction irked her slightly.
“So, is that a no?”
Sirius approached and said,
“That’s what I wanted to tell you earlier; I couldn’t convince her to stay.”
My Other Half
Alessandro shot Sirius a murderous look and said,
“I’ll talk to you later.”

Alessandro took Abril’s hand and led her to his tent. Once alone, he gently caressed her face and
hair.
“Is it truly you, Aby?”
Abril changed her hair color again, the vibrant red returning to her curls.
She placed her hand on Alessandro’s cheek and replied,
“Of course it’s me. I’m offended that you can’t recognize your wife.”
Alessandro took Abril’s face in his hands, looked at her closely, and said,
“I’ve waited so long to see you; it feels unreal that you’re here with me.”
Abril stood on tiptoe, kissed Alessandro, and whispered,
“This moment is real, I am real.”
Abril kissed him again and said,
“You can feel it ”
Alessandro returned the kiss; it was deep, wild, full of desire and pent–up passion, and as their lips
met, he said,
“Aby, my Aby.”
He repeated her name over and over as their lips pressed together, thirsty and hungry. During their time apart, he felt something was missing, like a part of him was gone. But at that moment, as he kissed her and felt her warmth, he felt whole again.
