After exchanging several kisses, Alessandro paused, holding Abril in his arms, and spoke with a trembling voice full of destructive guilt.

“I’m sorry.”

“Why are you apologizing?”

“For sending you away, believe me, it was painful to be apart from you.”

Abril knew it was true, at one point she had doubted it, but deep down she knew he was just as sad

as she was about not being together.

“That doesn’t matter anymore. It’s in the past; now we’re together.”

“Even so…”

Abril pulled away a little, placed a finger on Alessandro’s lips, and said.

“Don’t continue with that. We’re together, and from now on, we always will be. I don’t plan to go far from you ever again, so don’t try to push me away because you won’t succeed.”

Alessandro had planned to ask Abril to return to the mage’s tower. Although he was glad to see her, he was very nervous, as this was the battlefield. But when he saw her eyes, he saw total determination; there wasn’t a hint of doubt in them. He knew that no matter what he said, he wouldn’t be able to change her mind. He gently caressed her face and said,

“I suppose it would be useless to tell you to leave.”

“Yes, so don’t do it.”

“You know this is a very dangerous place.”

“I know, but I don’t know if you noticed before or not, but I’m not as weak as I used to be. Now I can protect myself and protect you too, and that’s what I plan to do; protect everyone I love.”

Alessandro sighed heavily and said.

“Aby, wars bring out the worst in people. To be honest, I wish you weren’t here, that you wouldn’t see the horrors of war…”

“I’ve already told you I don’t plan to leave.”

“I know, but even though you’re here, understand that I won’t let you rush into battle.”

“I can defend myself, Lessan.”

“And I’m glad about that, but won’t have to fight unless it’s necessary.”

“Okay, I’ll take care of the wounded while you fight. Il be waiting for you on this side of the barrier, but if you need me, remember I’ll be here for you.”

“Thank you for understanding, Aby.”

Cassian entered the tent without warning, cleared his throat to get their attention, and said.

“Um… Sorry to interrupt, but it’s total chaos outside”

Abril, seeing Cassian, moved away from Alessandro and went to him, gave him a hug, and said.

“I’m glad to see you’re okay, Cassian.”

“I’m also glad to see you, Aby. How have you been?

“Good, and now that I’m reunited with you, my family, I couldn’t be better. You don’t seem surprised to see me. Did you already know I was here?”

“I ran into Sirius, and he told me.”

“But let’s leave the chat for later; there are many wounded people outside.”

“You’re right, we’ll have time to catch up later.”

Abril approached Alessandro, gave him a soft kiss on the lips, and said.

“See you later.”

“Yes, but before you go, change your hair color back; it’s better if they don’t recognize you.”

“Yes, you’re right.”

Abril changed her hair color back to its original shade, and before she left, Alessandro said to her.

“Aby, try not to get close to the elves and avoid using your magic while they are around.”

“Yes.”

After Abril left, Cassian said.

“She seems to have changed.”

“Yes, she seems to have matured while we weren’t around.”

“I’ve assembled the generals, we need to restructure.”

“We’ve had many casualties.”

“Yes.”

“And the elves?”

“They’ve hardly suffered any casualties; they’re excellent warriors. It seems those guys weren’t just

all talk.”

“I’m glad we’re allies, at least for now.”

“Aren’t you afraid they might discover Abril?”

“Of course I am, but I will try to make Abril leave.”

“That’s harder than ending this war without any casualties.”

“Exactly, she can be very stubborn.”

“We’d better go; we can’t keep the generals waiting. They must be tired.”

Alessandro sighed. The war had been going on for a week, but for him, it felt like an eternity. He felt completely exhausted and knew the others must feel the same, even if they didn’t show it.

“Yes, let’s go.”

Alessandro spent a good while meeting with the generals, and when he returned to his tent, he was greatly surprised to see Abril waiting for him. She smiled at him and said,

“Welcome.”

Alessandro approached her, hugged her, and said,

“I never imagined I’d have you here. Just seeing you makes my fatigue disappear; I already feel

renewed.”

“You’re not being honest.”

“What?”

“You’re exhausted.”

Abril touched Alessandro’s cheek and used her light magic to make his fatigue disappear. Alessandro felt as if the warm rays of the sun were warming his entire being. His fatigue vanished, and he felt renewed.

“I see it wasn’t a lie that you can control your magic”

“I don’t lie. I worked hard to learn to control my magic because I really wanted to be useful to you,

to be your help.”

“You already were before learning to use your magic. To me, you have always been my help.”

“That’s not true. Before, I was just a burden to you.

Alessandro shook his head.

“That’s not true. I never considered you useless. To me, you were my help because only by your side could I feel at ease. That’s something only you can give me; you are my light in the midst of so

much darkness.”

Abril hugged him and asked.

“Do you really think that about me?”

“Yes, I always have, although at first, I refused to accept it.”

“The important thing is that you did, now nothing else matters.”

“You always say the same thing. You don’t hold back even a little bit of resentment about what I did in the past, for having hurt you so much.”

“That’s because I’ve already forgiven you. When I forgive, I forget. I only keep the good memories and discard the bad ones.”

“Sometimes I feel like I don’t even deserve you. You’re very good and wonderful, while I’m an idiot.”

“I won’t deny that sometimes you act like one, but we’re human. We’re imperfect beings who constantly fail.”

“That’s why I fell in love with you, because of the way you think, your warmth, and your kindness.” “I’m not that kind, Lessan. There are times when I’m selfish too, times when my thoughts might scare you. Within each of us, there’s something dark and twisted, although some of us show it more than others.”

“I don’t think there’s anything in you that could scare me.”

“Perhaps there is.”

Abril tilted her head and, seeing that Alessandro’s armor was stained with blood, she became

alarmed.

“Are you injured?”

“No, I’m fine.”

“Take off the armor, let me check your body.”

Alessandro began removing his armor, joking as he did so.

“Do you really want to see me without my clothes that badly?”

“Lessan, I just want to make sure you’re okay.”

After Alessandro bared his torso, Abril took a damp towel and began to clean the blood from his body.

“Lessan, have you confronted my father?”

“Why do you ask that?”

“Curiosity.”

Claim

“Actually, no. Your father has gathered a large army he’s sacrificing his own soldiers and some of the monsters to weaken us.”

“Lessan, my father is a dangerous man. When you fight him, be extremely cautious.”

“You don’t have to worry about that, I’ll make sure of it.”
