When Cassian went to Alessandro’s office, he looked very upset. He couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong with you, Cassian? You look upset,” he said while handing some documents to

Gabriel.

“Barto is still here.”

“And does that bother you?”

“No, what bothers me is that he doesn’t let me get close to Maya. He keeps interrupting us all the time and giving me death stares whenever Maya isn’t looking.”

“Ignore him, he’ll leave soon.”

“I’ve tried to get along with him, but his hatred for me seems to be great. I don’t want to be on bad terms with him; he’s my family, or at least I thought so.”

“You and Maya haven’t gotten married yet, so technically, he’s not your family.”

“But he will be soon.”

“Cassian, worry about it when he is. For now, stop worrying about it and help me. There is a lot of backlog work.”

“I am expressing my concern; you could show a little more empathy. If you were in my situation, I would have it with you.”

“I don’t know how to help you with that. My wife’s family wants to kill me, and I couldn’t care

less.”

“I guess I asked the wrong person.”

Cassian turned his gaze to Gabriel. He was married too, so Cassian thought he could

understand him better than his brother.

“Hey Gabriel, do you get along well with your wife’s family?”

“Yes.”

“And how do you make sure they don’t hate you for taking your wife away from them?”

“Uhm… I think they’ve never cared about that, or at least they’ve never shown discontent with me, so I can’t help you.”

“I guess I’ll have to figure it out on my own.”

Someone knocked on the door. Gabriel opened it. It was the butler, who was carrying a cage in his hand. He placed it on the desk and said:

“Your Majesty, I have brought what you asked for.”

The butler removed the blanket that covered the cage, revealing a falcon. Cassian said to him:

“Long time no see, Zer.”

Alessandro took the falcon out of its cage and told the butler to leave. Once they were alone, Cassian asked:

“What do you plan to do with Zer?”

“I will send the necklace to Abril along with Zer.”

Zer was the bird Alessandro used in war to send messages to his troops. Cassian asked him:

“Carrying letters is one thing, but I’m not sure if it can deliver a necklace.”

“Zer knows Taren, so he should be able to find him without any problem, or so I hope.”

Alessandro put one of the necklaces Maya had given him in a small bag and tied it to one of the bird’s legs. Then he went out to the balcony and released the bird into the sky, hoping it would reach its destination.

After taking a short walk in the garden, Maya sat on a bench. Barto looked around, then looked at Maya and asked her:

“Do you like your new life?”

“Why do you ask?”

“It’s just that this doesn’t suit you. You’ve always been a free spirit; this place is beautiful, but it’s like a cage. Wouldn’t you like to go back to how you were before?”

Maya stroked Lissana’s cheeks and told him:

“I’m fine like this.”

“Doesn’t seem like it.”

“I’m happy, Barto.”

“Maya, we’ve grown up together, and no matter how much you try to deceive me and deceive yourself, deep down you know it’s true–you’re not happy, or at least not completely.”
