Kiara took off a pendant she was wearing and tossed it to Ethan, afraid to get closer, and said, “I usually leave through a crack that appears in the barrier. It’s never in the same place, so you’ll need

this to find it.”

Ethan stared at the pendant. It was a compass.

Kiara continued, “The golden needle will show you the exact location of the crack. And you better give it back to me. Otherwise, I’ll tell my mother you stole it, and I’ll have every guard looking for you. There won’t be a place where you can hide from me.”

Ethan had always thought that the princess and the queen were completely different, but it

seemed he had been mistaken.

“I promise to return it.”

“You better. I’m not as nice as I seem.”

Ethan glanced at the baby, which made Kiara nervous. She stepped back a few paces, getting a little closer to the door, and said in a low voice so the guards behind it wouldn’t hear, “You got what you wanted. Now go.”

Ethan went out onto the balcony. Kiara ran to close it. Although she had helped him, she didn’t

trust him.

Lissana began to cry. Kiara began to rock her to calm her down and said, “It’s okay, baby. Everything will be alright. You’ll be with your mother soon.”

Ethan jumped from one balcony to another. As he stepped out into the hallway again, he saw that the guards were changing, so he had to go back to the room he had come from.

He waited a moment. When he poked his head out the door again, he didn’t see any guards, so he took the opportunity to slip out of the palace, slinking through the shadows. Once outside, he took the compass Kiara had given him out of his pocket and headed in the direction the golden arrow pointed.

When Ethan reached the designated spot, he didn’t find the crack Kiara had mentioned. For a moment, he thought the princess had tricked him, as there was nothing there at first glance.

It wasn’t until he reached out to touch the barrier that he realized there was an opening in it. He put his hand through first, then his head. Seeing no danger on the other side, he stepped through completely.

When Abril woke up, she saw Alessandro sleeping in a chair, holding her hand, as the sun began to

rise.

Abril got out of bed and walked over to the crib in the corner of the room to check on her daugh She was sick and needed to be cured, but the crib was empty.

Alessandro woke up. Seeing that Abril was not in bed, he was startled, but when he turned around,

he found her by the crib.

“Aby.”

Desperate, Abril asked, “Where’s Lissana? I need to cure her.”

Alessandro approached Abril. He didn’t know how to tell her that Lissana was gone, that he had failed to protect her and had let her be taken.

Seeing the look on Alessandro’s face, Abril was filled with even more anxiety and fear.

“Where’s Lissana? Is she with Maya?” Alessandro shook his head.

“Lessan, where’s my baby?”

“Lissana is gone.”

Abril grabbed Alessandro by the collar and asked again, desperate to hear that her daughter was

gone.

“Where’s my baby?”

“They took her. There was nothing I could do to stop it. I’m sorry,” he said, his voice choked with

emotion.

Abril felt her breath catch in her throat, as if each word Alessandro said was a punch to the

stomach.

“No! Not my baby! Tell me it’s a lie, that my baby is okay. Tell me!”

“I’m sorry, Aby. I… I’m sorry.”

“Who took my baby? Was it Cira?”

“No, it was the Elf Queen. She came for you. Lissana was very ill. She was dying. I had no choice but to let her in, but there was nothing I could do to stop her from taking her. I’m sorry, Aby.”

Abril was glad it wasn’t Cira who had taken her daughter, but the fact that it was the Elf Queen didn’t make her feel any better.

Alessandro rushed to her side, scooped her up in his arms, carried her to the bed, and gently laid her down. “You’ve been unconscious for days. You need to rest.”

Abril tried to get up again, but Alessandro stopped her. She burst into tears and said, her voice choked with pain and despair, “I have to get my baby back.”

“I know, I feel the same way you do, but you can’t go right now. You’ve been fighting for your life for seven days. I don’t want to lose you too, Aby.”

“If anything happens to her, I…”

“Everything will be alright. We’re going to get her back. We’ll have our daughter back.”

Alessandro wiped Abril’s tears and said, “Our family will be whole again. We’ll be happy again. I promise.”
