Part II: Hearts Down
Maya’s trembling, cold hand clung to Cassian’s. He turned, leaning down to look directly into her beautiful red eyes, which at that moment looked glassy. She seemed to be on the verge of tears.
“Do you really want me to stay?” he asked.
“Yes, don’t leave me. Stay with me.”
Cassian still had some things to do, but at that moment, he didn’t want to worry about anything or
anyone but her.
“Do you want to talk?”
Maya shook her head. She knew she had to tell him everything that had been happening, everything she had been hiding from him, but she didn’t want to do it right then.
“No, but if you want to talk…”
“I won’t force you to.”
Maya could see an expression of pain on Cassian’s face. She knew that he wasn’t asking because he didn’t want to know, but because he felt betrayed.
“Cassian, I love you,” Maya said, tears threatening to spill. “More than you can imagine, so never think otherwise. I know it was wrong of me not to tell you about my illness, but don’t think that I don’t consider you my partner, because you are. To me, you are my partner, my friend, my life companion, the one I have chosen.”
Maya could no longer hold back her tears. She began to cry like a small child. Cassian put his arms around her. There were so many things he wanted to say, but they were stuck in his throat. In the end, he didn’t say anything and just held her tightly.

Abril felt much better. She got out of bed.
“You should rest a little longer,” Alessandro told her
“I’m tired of being in bed, and I feel much better now. Are you sure?” she asked. “I don’t know what that medicine Ethan gave me was, but it’s much better than what Sirius prepares.”
Abril approached Lissana’s crib. Seeing it empty, she felt as if her heart were being crushed.
“Lessan, did the Elf Queen really save Lissana?”
“Yes, when she arrived, Lissana was very ill. If it hadn’t been for her, maybe our little one…” His voice trailed off. “I had no choice but to let her in, Aby.”

“I know, I don’t blame you. I blame myself for not being there when she needed me most.”
“Aby, the Elf Queen mentioned that Lissana had gotten sick because her power had been suppressed. You…”
“Yes, when Lissana’s powers awakened, I was afraid they would get out of control, so I suppressed
her power.”
“Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you hide from me that Lissana’s powers had awakened?”
“I was afraid.”
“Afraid of me!”
“No.”
“You didn’t trust me. Lissana is not only your daughter, Abril, she is also my daughter. I have th right to know what happens to her. You can’t decide for me.”
“I’m sorry, Lessan, I’m so sorry. It’s just that her power awakened so soon that I didn’t know what to
do.”
“If you had told me, I would have helped you decide what to do.”
“Now I regret not doing it. Forgive me.”
“That doesn’t matter now. What matters now is getting Lissana back.”
Although Alessandro said it didn’t matter, Abril could see the disappointment in his eyes. She had hurt him by not trusting him, by hiding the truth from him.
Alessandro sat down on the bed and ran a hand through his hair, mussing it up, something he usually did when he was frustrated and desperate. “Damn it, when will all this end, when can we truly be happy?”
Abril approached him. “To be honest, I ask myself the same question.”
Abril remembered the vision she had had when she was pregnant. In that vision, they had been happy. She placed a hand on Alessandro’s shoulder. “But I’m sure this will all be over someday. We’ll be back together and we’ll be very happy.”
Alessandro wrapped his arms around Abril’s waist. I hope so.”
He sounded tired and defeated. Abril put her hand on his head and buried her fingers in his soft hair. She stayed there, stroking his head for a long time while he clung to her waist. That simple contact comforted them both and calmed their battered hearts a little.
Alessandro pulled his head back. “You should rest. We have a hard day ahead of us tomorrow.” “Yes, tomorrow we will go and get our daughter back.”

Ethan had told Alessandro that he wouldn’t be able to enter Arkala, the Elf Kingdom, but Alessandro wouldn’t accept it until he saw for himself.
“Yes, we will.”
“Lessan, what is the Elf Queen like?”
“Someone powerful and dangerous.”
“Do you really think Lissana is okay?”
“From what Ethan said, they are taking very good care of her.”
“Have you thought about how to get Lissana back?”
“No, but if necessary we’ll steal her away in the middle of the night. We’ll do whatever it takes t get her back.”

“Yes, even if she shares blood ties with them, I’m not going to hold back. I’ll do whatever it takes to get our little girl back.”
“Aby, when we’re there, you have to be very careful.”
“Don’t worry, I will.”
Alessandro took Abril, laid her down on the bed. “Come on, rest.”
Although her magic was recovering quickly and she didn’t feel tired at all, Abril obeyed Alessandro and tried to sleep, as he seemed to be very worried about her. She snuggled up next to him. He looked haggard and tired, the sparkle in his eyes seemed to have disappeared completely. He must have had a terrible time while she was unconscious. She ran her hand over his cheeks and stroked them gently, using her magic to lull him to sleep. She kissed him on the forehead.
She tried to sleep, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t stop thinking about her daughter and how she would get her back. Being willing to do anything wasn’t enough; she needed a plan. Tired of going over the same thing in her head, she got out of bed, took a green tunic and black pants from her closet, and went to find Ethan.
When she reached the small cabin where she had lived for several years, memories flooded her mind, some good and some not so good, but all precious to her, because it had been the first place she had called home.
Ethan had seen her arrive and came out to greet her. “What are you doing here? You should be resting.”
“I’ve rested enough. Now we need to talk.”
