Part II: Don’t run away from me

Enora couldn’t believe she could hear the voice of her beloved sister again, whom she longed for and

missed so much.

Enora slowly approached her, doubting if it was really her or if they were just deceiving her.

“How can I believe what you’re saying is true?”

With a sweet smile, the young woman replied, “You can ask whatever you want, and I will answer it. I still

vividly remember all the time I spent with you, dear sister.”

Enora asked something that only her sister could know and that she doubted she had shared with her

daughter.

“What did I tell you the day you left Arkala?”

With a sad expression, Sophia replied, “That I shouldn’t come back because if I did, I would be locked up in

the Evil Tower.”

Enora shortened the distance between them and hugged her.

She had always wanted to apologize to her sister for saying that, for denying her the option of returning.

It was something that ate away at her soul day after day, a great weight that she carried on her shoulders

and which she thought she would never get rid of.

“I’m sorry Sophia, I’m sorry… if I hadn’t said that the day you left, maybe you wouldn’t have died.”

“My death is not your fault, Enora, so don’t blame yourself for it.”

Lissana was between them, trapped in that crushing embrace. She felt suffocated and began to cry.

Alessandro pushed Enora away when he heard his daughter’s cries, breaking their embrace, and said, “Get

away from her! You’re crushing my daughter!”

Sophia handed the baby to Alessandro and said, “Here, take care of her.”

Sophia turned halfway and said to her sister, “I would like to talk to you, if you’ll allow me, of course.”

Enora couldn’t refuse any of her sister’s requests because even though she told her to stop blaming herself, it was something she couldn’t help but feel.

“Of course, I want to talk to you too.”

“I would like to visit the garden. I’ve always wanted to see it one more time.”

“Then let’s go.”

Enora went to the exit and told her guards, “I don’t want anyone to interrupt us. Don’t follow us.”

Sophia was about to follow her sister when a large, strong hand stopped her.

Alessandro continued to cling to Abril’s arm. Sophia could tell everything he was thinking by looking into his eyes. He was like an open book. He was afraid that she would take over his wife’s body, that she would

not return.

“I have already lived a life. I don’t intend to take my daughter’s body to live a second life, so don’t worry.”

Alessandro still seemed anxious, so Sophia told him, “I’m the only one who can convince Enora to let

them go, even more so when I tell my sister who you really are.”

“Who I really am?! What do you mean by that?!”

“In the spiritual world, I met your mother. She has asked me to explain a few things to you.”

Alessandro had realized that he didn’t really know who his mother really was, so when Sophia mentioned her, he wanted to ask her an endless number of questions that he thought would never be answered.

“What things?!”

“I’ll tell you later. Now you’d better let me go before Enora rips your arm off to make you do it.”

Alessandro looked in the direction Enora was in. She was giving him a terrifying look. He let go of her and asked, “I want to know what my mother told you. I want to know what you’re going to tell the Elven Queen.”

“And you will know. I will tell you everything later, but now I had better go with my sister. It seems she is

getting impatient.”

Seeing that Alessandro seemed even more anxious than before, Sophia said, “Just as you care for your daughter, I want to care for mine, and I plan to continue doing so, so change that face.”

Sophia marched off with Enora. Alessandro could do nothing but watch as she disappeared behind the

door.

Kiara approached Alessandro and asked, “Was that really Aunt Sophia’s spirit in that girl’s body?”

“Yes, it was.”

“My mother has always felt that she has a debt to settle with Aunt Sophia. Maybe she will achieve what I have not been able to do, to make my mother forget those stupid archaic laws that we still keep.”

Alessandro had not paid much attention to the young woman, but hearing her speak caught his attention. He thought that perhaps she was indeed a possible ally.

“Ethan told us that you wanted to help us. Is that true?”

“Yes.”

Barto went to visit Maya in her room after Abril and Alessandro left the royal palace, but he didn’t find her. Only the pixie who always followed her everywhere was there, eating cookies like a mouse.

When he had asked her where Maya was, she sighed heavily and told him she didn’t know. That Maya was too upset to dare follow her.

Barto then went to look for Cassian, thinking she would be with him, but that was not the case either.

In the end, the two of them ended up searching the palace for her all day.

The first to find her was Cassian. She was lying on the ground, on a soft layer of grass. There were many flowers around her that covered her, and if he hadn’t passed close enough, he wouldn’t have noticed she

was there.

“What are you doing here?”

Maya sat up. She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she hadn’t heard him approach.

“I was just thinking.”

Cassian held out his hand and said, “You’re not well. You shouldn’t be out here.”

Maya didn’t take Cassian’s hand. She felt she had no right to after lying to him.

“Abril used her magic before she left. Although it’s not a cure, it makes me feel good.”

“Even so, you shouldn’t be out here. It will be dark soon, and the nights are usually cooler.”

“Yes, you’re right.”

Maya remained seated on the grass. Cassian sat down next to her and asked, “What’s wrong, Maya?”

“When Abril made me feel better, I thought about running to you, but then I thought maybe it wasn’t a good idea, that maybe you were still upset with me and that I have no right to be by your side.”

“I won’t deny that I’m still upset, but that’s because it hurts that you didn’t trust me.”

“I didn’t want you to suffer knowing that we have so little time to be together.”

Cassian took Maya’s hand and intertwined his fingers with hers.

“Maya, I love you and I want to be with you. I want you to take me into account when you make a decision because I want to share not only the good times with you but the bad times too, so stop hiding in the corners. Even if I’m upset, I want to be by your side. Or do you not want to be with me anymore?”

“Of course I do. That’s what I want most.”
