Part II: Lives

Alessandro entered the guardians‘ chamber once more. When his eyes adjusted to the intense light inside, the first thing he saw was his mother’s face, waiting for him with a warm smile.
“You’ve returned sooner than I expected.”
“There’s something I need to ask you.”
“Then ask, that’s why I’m here.”
Every time Alessandro saw his mother, it felt as if he was transported back to the past, to a time when she was alive and giving him her wise counsel.
“It’s about the keys to Hades. I have one in my possession, but I don’t know where the other is. Could you help me find it?”
“I know where the other key that opens the door to Hades is, but you cannot obtain it.”
“Why not?”
“Because the keys cannot be brought together. That’s why they were separated. When they are together, darkness surrounds them, and those nearby are affected by it. So, don’t try to find it, Lessan. Don’t bring
darkness to our realm.”
“But if you tell me where it is, I could try to protect it and…”
“You can’t. The place where the second key is located is very dangerous. It’s better that it stays where it
is.”
“But…”
“Lessan, the doors of Hades will open, no matter what you do. You cannot prevent it because it is something that is already written. What is not written is the ending. What happens after the doors open, that is what you can change.”
Alessandro clenched his fists tightly, his knuckles turning white from the pressure. Soleia placed her hand on his, as if she wanted to hold it, but she couldn’t because she did not have a physical body.
“Lessan, I understand how you feel, how frustrated you must be right now, but there are things we cannot avoid, things that must happen. So, don’t try to prevent it. Destiny runs in a line, and even if you try to disrupt its path, it will find another way to continue. It’s useless to try to deceive it because what is meant
to be, will be.”
Alessandro looked at his mother and asked, “Was your death and that of my siblings also part of that destiny?”
“As cruel as it may seem, yes. Our deaths were part of that destiny, so that you and your wife could meet.”
Alessandro remained silent, feeling guilty for the death of his family.

“Don’t feel guilty for our deaths, Lessan. As I said, destiny is not something we can change, except in
certain moments.”
“And that exception is opening the doors of hell and letting out all the demons that inhabit it?”
“Yes, because when the end of a world comes, that’s when you can create a new one. That’s when you can create your own path and challenge destiny.”
“I suppose there’s nothing I can do at this moment then.”
“No, at this moment, enjoy your family while you can and prepare for what is to come.”
“Then that’s what I’ll do.”
Maya was sitting in her father’s small garden. The roses were in full bloom, and there was a sweet
fragrance in the air. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the moment; the warm breeze running through the
garden tousled her short hair, and the birds‘ singing delighted her ears. Maya was so absorbed in that
moment that she didn’t notice when her father sat next to her until she heard his rough voice saying her
name.
“Maya.”
“Dad! When did you arrive?”
“Just a moment ago. What are you doing?”
“Enjoying this.”
“The palace gardens must be even more beautiful.”
“Yes, but this one is special. You created it. Here, the roses are sweeter, their colors more vibrant, and it seems everything shines more brightly. Even the birds sing more beautifully.”
Maya leaned on her father’s shoulder and continued, “I love being here.”
“I love it too, even though Barto thinks it’s silly. This place, this garden, and being with you all is what
makes me feel at home.”
“Actually, me too. It reminds me of the land of the fairies.”
“Fairies have a greater affinity with nature. That’s why we love gardens so much, even though you and your
brother never cared much for them.”
“That’s true. I preferred books, and Barto…”
“Your brother has always been crazy about gold. Sometimes I think he’s part dwarf, not fairy.”
That comment made Maya burst into laughter.
“You’re absolutely right.”

“The land of the fairies must have changed you.”
“Yes, since I returned, I feel something has changed inside me, as if everything were different.”
“You should return to the land of the fairies. If you do, your life will be long.”
“If I go back, I may never return. I don’t think the queen will let me go again.”
