Kiara was extremely happy; Barto’s marriage proposal was something she had not expected. Had it come at another time, it might have saddened her instead of bringing joy. But at that moment, everything was different because she was closer to gaining her mother’s acceptance. She kissed him and replied, Yes, Barto, I want to be your wife. I want to wear the mark of marriage on my hand and be united with you until death do us part.

Barto was so surprised that it took him a moment to digest her positive response to his proposal. Are you serious?!

Yes. Did you think I would reject you?

Barto began to kiss Kiara, starting with her forehead, her cheeks, her eyes, and her chin. He covered her entire face with sweet and tender kisses until he reached her lips, giving her a long

kiss that left her breathless.

I thought I had more chances of being rejected than accepted, which is why I still find it hard to believe you accepted my proposal.

Although happiness had overwhelmed Barto, a thought crossed his mind. What would Kiara’s

mother say

about this marriage?

Will you tell your mother?

Not yet, but I will soon. I will find a way for her to accept you.

And if she doesn’t?

Then I will abandon my position as princess and run away with you.”

You always said you couldn’t abandon your people when I suggested running away.

Yes, because back then, I was the only princess of my kingdom, the sole heir to the throne. But now that has changed. I have a cousin; she has the same rights as I do to inherit the throne. If I disappear, the weight of the throne will fall on her.

Barto began to piece things together and realized why Kiara was in that place. It wasn’t just for him; she was there to evaluate who might take her place.

This time you didn’t come to the human world just for me, did you?

Kiara smiled and replied, I’m preparing everything to be with you. That’s all you need to know.

Cassian gently laid Maya on the bed; she looked very pale. I think it would be best to ask Abril to

come.

Maya clung to Cassian’s clothes and said, Don’t go; stay with me. That’s all I need right now.

Cassian lay down beside her and wrapped his arms around her.

Maya nestled into his chest and said, It feels so good to be in your arms. I think I feel better.”

Maya, I don’t want you to lie to me. If you’re not feeling well, I want you to tell me because when you hide your pain, it only makes me worry even more.

I’m dizzy and my stomach is upset, but other than that, I’m fine. It’s because of using the teleportation scroll. If I rest, I’ll be fine, I’m not lying.

It’s not your illness?

No, when it’s that, I lose strength, my body weakens so much that I can’t move a finger. But that’s not the case now; I just have dizziness.

Cassian began to stroke her head tenderly. Alright, I’ll believe you, but if you don’t get better, I’ll ask

Abril to come.

That sounds good.

Cassian continued to stroke Maya’s head even after she fell asleep. He watched her face, how delicate and fragile she looked at that moment. She had always been strong and lively; seeing her in that state broke his heart, especially because there was nothing he could do to help her other than stay by her side.

Useless, he thought, I’m completely useless, unable to do anything to save the woman I love. Maya slept the rest of the day, waking up as the sun began to set. When she opened her eyes, she saw the orange light bathing the room. Cassian was sleeping beside her. Maya caressed his sleeping face; he was handsome, undoubtedly the most handsome man she had ever been with, but that wasn’t what had stolen her heart. It was his kindness, his sweetness, his gentleness, his bravery, and how stubborn he could be.

How much I love you, my silly little prince.

You should say sweeter words; I like the I love you, but the sillywas unnecessary.

It’s my way of showing my love.

Are you feeling better?

Yes, I no longer feel nauseous. I feel much better. In fact, I’m very hungry.

Part II I am no longer the sole heir to the throne. Do you fancy anything in particular?

Apple pie.

I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to eat something so sweet.

I know, but I’m dying for a piece of pie, so don’t deny me.”

Alright.

Cassian called one of the maids and asked her to bring something light to eat and an apple pie, along with some fresh lemon water. The maid nodded, left, and soon returned with a bowl of soup and an apple pie. After delivering the tray with the food, she left.

Maya, smelling the apple pie, didn’t hesitate and took a bite. The sweet taste of the crust combined with the tartness of the apple made a tear roll down her cheek; it was delicious.

Are you okay, Maya?!

Yes, I’m happy to have lived to this day. This is delicious.

You scared me; I thought you were feeling unwell again.”

Not at all. I’m wonderful now that I’ve tasted something so delicious.

Cassian laughed and said, I’m glad to hear that.

Maya devoured the pie with great enthusiasm, which made Cassian feel more at ease.

You should eat some soup; it’s not good to eat only sweet things.

Maya had no appetite for the soup. She pushed the tray that was on her legs and said, I don’t feel

like it.

Cassian took a spoonful of soup and said, Come on, eat a little.

When Maya smelled the soup, she felt dizzy again. She pushed his hand away. Take that away from me, or you’ll make me feel sick.

Cassian removed the tray with the food and immediately called one of the maids to take it away. Then he served Maya a glass of fresh lemon water.

I think it would be better if I went to find Abril.

There’s no need; I’ll go see her, but not because I’m feeling unwell.
