Cassian stared intently at the Guardiansdoor. His emotions were mixedhe was excited to discover what lay behind it, but also a bit afraid. Alessandro noticed how anxious Cassian seemed, so he placed a reassuring hand on his brother’s shoulder and said:

Come on, we need to go inside. Everything will be fine; there’s nothing to fear.”

You said you saw Mom in there. Do you think she’s still inside?Cassian asked.

That’s the great thing about this room: you can talk to any guardian you want, as many times as you want.

She’ll be there, so let’s go.”

Yeah, let’s go.”

They approached the door together. As Cassian came within a few steps, he felt a strange pull, as though someone was calling him. He reached out and placed his hand on the door. The moment he did, he felt a strange energy course through his body. He wanted to pull his hand back, but then he heard a voice in his heada voice he could never forgetencouraging him to open the door. It was his mother’s voice.

Without thinking twice, he opened the door. A blinding light momentarily overwhelmed him, and it wasn’t until his eyes adjusted that he saw the place for what it was: a long hallway lined with countless portraits hanging on the walls. As they walked, Cassian realized that each portrait was a depiction of a person.

Alessandro, walking beside him, explained, This is the room of the guardians.”

Where’s Mom?Cassian asked.

Soleia appeared suddenly. I’m here, Cassian.

Seeing his mother, the one he had missed so deeply and longed to see again, Cassian couldn’t hold back

his tears. Mom,” he cried.

My little one.

Soleia approached and wrapped her arms around him as if to embrace him. You’ve grown so much.”

Cassian hugged his mother, but to his dismay, she didn’t have a physical formhis hands passed right through her. His expression changed, showing a mixture of sadness and pain. Soleia caressed his cheek without touching him and said, My dear, I’m not here physically, but I am here. And I’m so happy to see

you.”

She turned to Alessandro and said, Lessan, you found the door, and you did it faster than I expected. You’ve surprised me.”

You could have told me where the door was and saved us the trouble of searching for it,Alessandro

replied.

If I had done that, it would’ve been boring! I liked that you two came together in this secret search,

working as a team to find me.

Cassian laughed at his mother’s response. Even in death, she still had that sense of humor he fondly

remembered.

I’m glad you haven’t changed a bit, Mom,he said.

I may have lost my physical body, but my soul and essence are still the same. Death doesn’t change that.”

I’m glad to hear that,” Alessandro said with a big smile.

I thought so too when I learned it,Soleia added. It was comforting to know that I would still be me after leaving the human world.

Cassian asked, Mom, are you okay?

Yes, the spiritual world isn’t so bad. After all, it’s a place where you can see those you thought were lost.”

Dad and my brothers?Cassian inquired.

Yes, they’re here too.

Are they doing well?

They are.”

Cassian was relieved to know that his father and brothers were in a better place.

There’s something else I wanted to ask you. Why didn’t you ever tell us about our lineage? Why didn’t you

tell us we were guardians?

I never told you because I didn’t want you to spend your whole lives preparing for something that might never come. I, and all the guardians before me, lived that way, and it’s stressful. I didn’t want the same for

you.”

And now, if that moment does come, we’re not prepared to face it.

You are prepared. You’re strong, both of you. I’m so proud of you.”

Cassian hesitated for a moment before asking, Mom, there’s something elseI’m in love with a girl who’s

halffairy, but she’s dying because she left the fairy land.”

She needs to go back to fairy land. That place is like medicine for fairies; that’s why they live longer than

any other race.

If she goes back, the Fairy Queen won’t let her return to the human world.

That Fairy Queen may be a wicked witch, but as a guardian, you can force her to let the girl go. She can’t keep her. That’s one of the perks of being a guardian.

Thank you, Mom, thank you.

It’s a shame I can’t meet the girl who’s made you smile like that, but she must be someone special.

She is. Maya’s wonderful. That’s why I can’t imagine life without her.”

Then don’t let her go, because that means you’ve found the right person.

Alessandro stepped in and added, I feel the same way.

Cassian kept talking to his mother, asking her countless questions as they walked down the long hallway, and his mother told him about each of the portraits, laughing at some of the complaints she made along

the way.

After a few hours, Soleia said, You should go. As much as I’ve loved seeing you, you shouldn’t stay longer than necessary.

Can we come back to see you?Cassian asked.

Soleia shook her head. Don’t come back unless you have questions that need answers from the guardians. Out there, you have a life, a family to care for. You can’t cling to the past; you must live in the

present.”

She smiled sweetly at them. I’ll always be here for you, my children.

Alessandro said, “Until next time, Mom.

Until next time, my children.

Cassian and Alessandro walked toward the door. Once they had exited, Cassian stared at the door again.

What’s wrong, Cassian?Alessandro asked.

I was just thinking about Mom, Dad, and our brothers. I’ve always felt guilty about their deaths. After hearing what Mom said, it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I understand because I felt the same way. Now, let’s get out of here. Time works differently in there, so it

must have been hours out here.

I’m worried about Maya. She wasn’t doing well.”

Then let’s hurry out of here. There’s someone waiting for us outside.”
