Part II: A New Princess

Only one day remained before the wedding, but Maya had stopped thinking about it. The news of her pregnancy had left her in shock, especially because she wasn’t sure whether to tell Cassian now or wait until after the wedding. Maya went to her room, even though there were still some wedding details to organize. At that moment, she couldn’t focus on anything other than her baby. She lay down on the bed and stared at the ceiling. Suddenly, the little pixie appeared.

“You cannot marry that human,” the pixie declared.

Maya caught the little creature and snapped, “Shut up, I’m not in the mood for your nonsense.”

“You cannot marry,” the pixie insisted.

Maya sat up on the bed and warned, “Do you want me to crush you?”

“But you can’t get married, you must cancel the wedding,” the pixie persisted.

“First, you insisted that I go to the land of the fairies, and now you want me to cancel my wedding. Why are you so adamant about this?” Maya demanded.

The pixie resisted speaking, and Maya, lacking patience, the little creature a bit.

“Talk, or I’ll crush you like a grape.”

“Don’t crush me, don’t crush me! Fine, I’ll talk,” the pixie pleaded.

“Start talking,” Maya ordered.

“It was the Fairy Queen. She told me to convince you to cancel the wedding.”

“And why does she care if I get married?” Maya asked, perplexed.

“I don’t know. She just said you must not marry.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t know, the Queen didn’t say,” the pixie replied nervously.

Maya released the pixie. “I’m not canceling my wedding, so go tell her that.”

“The Queen will not be pleased with your response,” the pixie warned.

“I don’t care whether she’s pleased or not. I’m marrying the man I love, and nothing will stop me.”

“Very well, I will tell her. I hope you don’t regret the decision you’ve made.”

“I won’t,” Maya affirmed.

Before disappearing, the pixie said, “The Fairy Queen will not let you marry. She doesn’t give up

easily.”

“Neither do I,” Maya retorted.

Once alone, Maya placed her hand on her belly, still flat, and aside from the nausea, she didn’t feel anything. She wondered if her baby was really there. Maya remained lost in her thoughts until night fell and Cassian returned. He approached, kissed her on the forehead, and asked, “How are you?”

“Nervous. And you?”

“Nervous,” he replied.

Cassian stroked Maya’s cheek and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “And happy because tomorrow, you will finally become my wife.”

Maya kissed him and asked suddenly, “Do you want children?”

“Of course. I want you as my wife, I want us to have children, and I want us to be happy. I want everything with you,” Cassian responded.

His answer made all of Maya’s doubts and fears disappear as if by magic. Although her pregnancy hadn’t come at the best time, she stopped being afraid. She wasn’t alone; she had someone to lean on. She hugged Cassian, burying her fingers in his hair.

“I want everything with you too,” she murmured.

Cassian embraced her and asked while breathing in the scent of her short hair tickling his nose, “We’ve never talked about having children. Do you want children?”

“The idea never crossed my mind, and when they come, I’m sure I’ll be scared, but yes, I do want children with you. Maybe sooner than we think.”

“I wonder what our child would be like,” Cassian mused.

“I don’t know, but I’m sure they’ll be beautiful, and we will love them dearly,” Maya replied.

“Rest assured, that’s exactly how it will be,” he whispered, kissing her neck.

Cassian then said, “I should go.”

“Where to?” Maya asked, surprised.

“Tomorrow is our wedding. We must sleep separately tonight.”

“Why?”

“I can’t see the bride on the wedding day.”

“Why not?”

“They say it’s bad luck.”

“That’s nonsense. Don’t tell me you believe that,” Maya teased.

“A little, and since I don’t want anything to mar our happiness, I’d rather not tempt fate,” he

admitted.

“So, I’ll be sleeping alone tonight?” she asked.

“Yes,” he confirmed.

“I suppose nothing I say will change your mind,” Maya sighed.

“No,” Cassian replied firmly.

He pulled away, though Maya resisted letting him go. He gave her a soft kiss on the lips and said, “I love you, Maya. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“I love you too,” she whispered.

Cassian headed for the door. Before leaving, he smiled and said, “I’ll be waiting for you. Don’t back

out at the last minute.”

“Never,” Maya promised.

Cassian left the room, closing the door behind him, leaving Maya alone. She stepped out onto the balcony, the soft summer breeze stirring her hair. She looked up at the sky and wished with all her heart for tomorrow to come, so she could be with her beloved again and never be apart.

The next day, several maids came to wake Maya up very early. She complained, but her protests were ignored. They pulled her out of bed and took her to the bathroom, where they gave her a long bath, massaging her skin and applying aromatic oils. Under different circumstances, this would have seemed wonderful, but in her current state, it was the opposite. The scent of the oils made her nauseous, and she had to ask for another bath to wash the oils off her body.

Afterward, the maids served her breakfast. They carefully applied her makeup and styled her hair, which proved to be a challenge due to its short length.

“May I come in?” asked Abril, poking her head through the door.

“Of course,” Maya replied, happy to have her friend nearby.

“I brought you a gift,” Abril said.

Abril handed Maya a box containing a diamond tiara. “Alessandro asked me to give this to you. It’s a gift for you.”

The tiara looked like a royal jewel–beautiful and seemingly very expensive.

“Is it really for me?” Maya asked, surprised..

“Yes, he wanted me to tell you it symbolizes that today you become a princess, as you will now be part of the royal family.”

Maya hadn’t expected such a thoughtful gesture from Alessandro. Though the tiara seemed a bit excessive, she decided to wear it for the meaning it held.

“Tell him thank you. I’ll take good care of it,” Maya said.

After dressing, she asked the maids to place the tiara on her head, alongside the veil. When they finished, she turned to Abril before looking in the mirror. “How do I look?” she asked.

“Beautiful,” Abril replied.

Maya looked in the mirror and felt tears welling up, though she wasn’t quite sure why, for she did

look stunning.

Someone knocked on the door.

“May I come in?” asked a male voice from the other side of the door, which Maya recognized immediately.

“Yes, come in,” she answered.

The door opened, and when Maya saw her father with tears in his eyes, she couldn’t help but shed a few tears herself.

“You look beautiful, my little girl,” he said.

“I thought you wouldn’t come,” Maya confessed.

“I would never miss your wedding,” her father replied.

Maya hugged him tightly. “I love you, Dad. Thank you for coming. You have no idea how much this means to me.”

“Oh, I know, and that’s why I couldn’t miss it. This is the day my little girl becomes a woman.”

“I grew up a long time ago, Dad,” Maya smiled.

“Yes, but it wasn’t until today that I realized my little girl has become a woman.”

Cassian was extremely nervous; he couldn’t stop pacing back and forth. Alessandro placed a hand on his shoulder and said, “Calm down, Cassian.”

“But she’s taking so long. What if she changed her mind? What if she doesn’t want to marry me anymore?”

“I don’t think so. Maya seems like a determined woman. If she’s decided to marry you, I doubt she’ll

back out.”

“Yes, but she never wanted to get married, and if…”

“Stop thinking about that. She’s already here.”

Cassian looked up, and upon seeing her, he was stunned. Maya looked so beautiful that for a

moment he forgot to breathe. Maya was half–fairy, but it wasn’t until that moment that he became fully aware of her ethereal nature. She approached slowly, a beautiful smile on her lips, and with each step, her dress moved slightly, making it seem as though she floated rather than walked.

Maya walked arm–in–arm with her father to the garden where the wedding was being held. When she arrived, she was surprised to see how beautiful the garden had turned out, especially since she’d left things unfinished the day before. But when she saw Cassian waiting for her and their eyes met, everything else ceased to matter. Everything around them seemed to fade away; it was just the two of them.

When Maya reached the flower–filled chapel prepared for the ceremony, she took Cassian’s hand.

“You better take care of my daughter; she’s my most precious treasure,” Ryan said.

“And now she’ll be mine. I’ll take good care of your daughter, sir.”

“You better, or I’ll forget who you are and make you suffer, I swear.”

Ryan took his seat.

Maya laughed and said to Cassian, “Take his threat seriously; my dad doesn’t lie.”

“You look gorgeous.”

“Thank you. You look very handsome too. I think I’ve fallen in love with you all over again.” Cassian squeezed Maya’s hand. “Me too. When I saw you arrive, I fell in love all over again.”

The priest began the ceremony. It was long and beautiful. Abril leaned on Alessandro’s shoulder and asked, “Are all weddings like this?”

“Yes.”

“Ours was short, very short. I didn’t know they could be so long and beautiful.”

“When we got married, I was very angry, so I decided to shorten the ceremony. Now I regret that. Maybe we should redo our wedding.”

“Maya suggested the same, but I told her no. I’m already your wife; I don’t need to repeat the ceremony.”

“Are you sure?”

Maya and Cassian began to say their wedding vows, in which they both swore eternal love.

Cassian took one of the daggers from the table, made a small cut, and let his blood drip onto the

matrimonial parchment.

It was Maya’s turn, but just as she was about to do it, an unexpected guest appeared, interrupting the wedding. It was the Fairy Queen. She crossed the distance between them. Maya clenched her hands tightly, not understanding why the Queen was there or why she was interrupting her

wedding.

“What are you doing here, Your Majesty? And why are you interrupting my wedding?”

“I’ve come to take you, Maya, so you will come with me.”

“I will return to the land of the fairies, but not now. I ask you to leave.”

The Fairy Queen brushed a strand of hair from Maya’s face. “I won’t leave without you, my little

wandering fairy.”

Her hand caressed Maya’s cheek, who tried not to flinch at the touch and the words that came from the Fairy Queen’s mouth.

“You will become my successor, the new Fairy Queen.”

“I can’t,” Maya replied without hesitation. Though tempting, she didn’t want the fairy throne; she just wanted to be happy with the man she loved.

The Fairy Queen took a step back. “Why not?”

“My place is here, beside the man I love.”

“What is so special about this human that you would forsake a kingdom for him?”

“My heart, that’s why I can’t accept being your successor.”

Maya touched her belly. It wasn’t something she wanted to reveal at that moment, but she had to make it clear to the Fairy Queen that she could never accept being the Fairy Queen.

“And besides, he is the father of my child.”

The Fairy Queen’s surprise was even greater than Maya had anticipated.

“Maya, is that true? Are you pregnant?” Cassian asked, unable to believe what he had heard.

Maya nodded. “Yes, I found out yesterday that I’m pregnant. That’s why I couldn’t shake the

nausea.”

Cassian hugged Maya; this was undoubtedly the happiest day of his life, not just because of the wedding but also because of the news that he was going to be a father.

Maya pulled away from Cassian, took the dagger prepared for her, made a small cut, and let her blood drip onto the parchment. Their blood mixed, the parchment glowed, and a mark appeared on Maya’s left hand and Cassian’s left hand, sealing the marriage.

The Fairy Queen, who had been in shock until then, exclaimed, “No! What have you done?”

“This is my wedding. You can stay or leave, but I won’t let you keep interrupting it.”

Maya saw the emotions flit across the Fairy Queen’s face: pain, rejection, anger.

Cassian prepared to defend Maya in case the Fairy Queen attacked, but she didn’t.

“I hope you don’t regret the decision you’ve made.”

She turned around.

Maya began to cough up blood.

“Maya!”

Until that moment, she had been fine, so she didn’t understand what was happening and couldn’t say anything to calm Cassian, who sounded desperate. Suddenly, Maya screamed in pain.

“Maya! Where does it hurt?”

“It hurts…!”

Maya felt as if someone were squeezing her heart to make it explode.

Abril ran to Maya and used her healing magic, but it didn’t work; Maya continued to scream in pain.

“Cassian… It hurts so much, I can’t die like this.”

Cassian took Maya in his arms and said, “Don’t worry, you won’t die.”

The fairy queen had turned around, staring intently at Maya as she writhed in pain.

“Maya is suffering, help her!”

“I tried to help her, but she wouldn’t listen to me. She made her decision, now she must pay the

price.”

“I’m not asking, I’m ordering you!”

“You’ve got some nerve to order me around, boy.”

Ryan approached the fairy queen and said, “You want my daughter to be your successor, don’t you? Then help her.”

“I want her to be my successor, but she doesn’t want it. She made that very clear a moment ago.”

Barto approached the queen, bowed before her, and began to plead. “Help my sister. I will take her place, but save her.”

Kiara knew that if Barto became the fairy queen’s successor, it would be even more difficult for them to be together. Though she didn’t want to make an enemy of the fairy queen, she couldn’t stand by and watch her lover sacrifice his life for her.

“Your Majesty, I understand that you feel offended, but Maya is pregnant with a guardian’s child, so you must help her. You are obligated to do so.”

The fairy queen gazed intently at Kiara, then approached Maya, Cassian clung to Maya as if his life depended on it.

“Give her to me.”
