Barto remained silent, unable to answer Kiara’s question. Though he wanted with all his heart to be with her, Maya was his family, and he couldn’t abandon her.
“Barto, look at me!”
Barto continued to turn his back on Kiara. She got up, approached him, and forced him to look at
her.
“You asked me to marry you. You said you would be with me, that you loved me. Were they all lies?”
“No, none of it is a lie. I love you and want to be with you for the rest of my life, but I can’t abandon
my sister.”
“Are you willing to sacrifice what we have for your sister?”
“I promised my mother; I promised I would take care of Maya. I can’t…”
Kiara pushed him and began to give him small punches on his chest. “Idiot, you’re a damn idiot. You don’t have to sacrifice your happiness for anyone. Cassian is part of the guardians; I’m sure he’ll find a way to bring her back. You just have to wait. Don’t go to the land of the fairies, Barto.”
“In another time and other circumstances, I would have waited. Maya is pregnant; I can’t abandon
her.”

The fairy queen was heading to her room when one of the guards approached her. “Your Majesty, the human prince has fainted.”
“Call a healer, make sure he is well taken care of.”
“He didn’t stop calling for Miss Maya until he collapsed.”
“For now, treat him. I’ll deal with it later. I need to rest; I don’t want anyone to disturb me.”
When she connected with Maya, the fairy queen could feel not only her pain but also her emotions -the pain, the despair, and the love that she felt. These emotions continued to resonate within her, and for the first time in her life, she realized why some people would give their lives for the person they loved. She understood why Maya was willing to die for the human.
The fairy queen rested for an entire day, as her emotions were in turmoil. The next day, the first thing she did was go to see Maya, who was still under the effects of her magic, immersed in a
deep sleep.
After ensuring that Maya was alright, she went to see Cassian. When she arrived, she heard someone banging on the door repeatedly from inside.
“What is all this commotion?”
“It’s the human prince, Your Majesty. He keeps trying to get out of the room.”
“Open the door.”
When the door opened, Cassian tried to escape, but before he could set foot outside the room, he felt a strange force pulling him back inside.
“Where is Maya?!”
“Resting.”
“I order you to take me to her.”
“You will see her when she wakes up, so stop making such a fuss.”
Cassian looked tired and haggard; it seemed he hadn’t eaten or slept since he had arrived.
“You should rest too. You look terrible. Maya will be scared if she sees you like this.”
“I want to see her. Take me to her.”
“Didn’t you hear what I said?”

“I heard you, but I’m not asking you, I’m ordering you. I am of the guardian lineage; you are.
obligated to obey.”

“It’s true, I owe obedience to the guardians, but that doesn’t mean I have to do everything you ask.”
“Damn witch! Take me to Maya!”
“You can stop shouting. I’m helping you, so you should be more polite.”
“Helping us? You just want to separate us.”
“That’s true, but for now I can’t, so stop throwing tantrums and rest, because your life is no longer just yours. If you want Maya to get better, start taking care of yourself.”
Cassian was about to complain again when several fairies entered with trays of food. They left them on a table in the room and quickly departed.
“Eat, drink, and sleep,” ordered the fairy queen before turning away.
“I won’t eat anything! Take me to Maya this instant!”
The fairy queen was usually very patient and always kept a cool head, never letting her emotions get the best of her. But at that moment, she was still feeling some of Maya’s emotions. She turned around, lifted Cassian into the air with her magic, and said to him, “You do nothing but blame me for everything, making me out to be the villain in this story. But it was you who caused Maya to commit such madness, to marry you. Your heart and hers became intertwined. You caused her pain and suffering, not me. You can’t even imagine how much she had to suffer because of that damn marriage mark.”
“What?!”
“The marriage mark is for humans. For fairies, it becomes the total surrender of who you are, a lifelong vow. Fairies have long lives, but humans do not. Your lives are fleeting, and you have sentenced Maya to a short life that will last only a few decades, if you have a long life, that is.”
Cassian’s shirt was partially open, and the queen could see the marriage mark engraved on his chest, over his heart. She said, “That mark on your chest binds your heart to hers, not just as a simple promise, but literally. Her life is tied to yours. If you live, she lives. If you die, she will die too. So stop throwing tantrums like a child and do what I say, not for yourself, but for Maya.”
“You’re lying!”
“Fairies cannot lie. We are not like humans, who only let lies spill from their mouths.”
“But you know how to hide the truth.”
“When I don’t want to say something, I omit it. But at this moment, I am not doing that.”

“Maya is half–human.”

“But it is her fairy blood that predominates in her body. I tried to separate her from you to protect
her.”
“You tried to kill her by not breaking the bonds with her. I saw how she weakened day by day.”
“She is a fairy. Once the bond is created, it cannot be broken, only changed. Being bound to me, her life in the fairy land would be long. Now that bond has changed. It is you who has bound her heart.”
“What does that mean?”
“My bond with Maya has disappeared. There is nothing that ties her to me anymore. I tried to protect her. I didn’t want her to have the same fate as my daughter. My daughter’s life was shortened by marrying a damn human, but in the end, she chose the same fate by choosing you.”
The queen was furious. She threw him to the ground and said before leaving, “When Maya wakes
up, I will have you taken to see her.”
Then she left, closing the door behind her, leaving Cassian feeling miserable. Maya had never wanted a wedding, but he had insisted over and over until she agreed to marry him. But what he had never imagined was that what he considered a promise of love would end up becoming a
curse.
He lay on the floor, trying to digest what the fairy queen had told him. After a while, he got up from the floor and ate, even though he wasn’t hungry. But he forced himself to do it. He had to be strong for Maya, for when they reunited.
