Part II: A Heartbeat

When Maya awoke, she found herself lying on a bed of flowers. She looked around and saw no one; she was completely alone. Yet, she knew where she was–the land of the fairies, in the healing room. Maya tried to get up, but her body felt heavy. Despite the effort it took, she forced herself to stand; she had to find Cassian and make sure he was alright.
Maya was about to open the door when it swung open by itself. It was the Fairy Queen.
“You are not well yet; you should be resting. Go back to bed.”
“Where is Cassian?”
“Resting in another room.”
“I want to be with him. I need to see him.”
“You are weak and pregnant. Go back to bed.”
Maya felt so weak that her legs could no longer support her. Before she could fall to the floor, the queen caught her in her arms.
“Lie down, I will have him brought to you.”
Maya didn’t feel well at all, so she returned to the bed of flowers, which, despite appearances, was quite comfortable.
“I don’t feel well. I was supposed to recover upon returning here.”
“That was before you got married. Now your recovery will be slower.”
“Why?”
“That doesn’t matter. You need to rest. This room will help you recover faster, so don’t leave it.”
“I want to see Cassian.”
“You will see him soon.”
The queen headed for the door. Maya had thought of reprimanding her for many things when she saw her, but in the end, she only said, “Thank you for saving me.”
The Fairy Queen paused for a moment and then continued on her way without saying anything.
Cassian was sitting by the door as usual, waiting for someone to come in and take him to his beloved. When the door suddenly opened, several fairies entered, carrying clean clothes and several pitchers of water.

“Where is Maya?” he asked.
One of the fairies replied, “We have been asked to prepare you.”
“For what?”

The Fairy Queen entered at that moment and answered his question, “So you can see Maya.”
“Take me to her. Where is she?”
“First, take a bath and change your clothes. You stink. If you present yourself to Maya in this state,
you will only make her worry.”
Although Cassian didn’t care about his appearance, he didn’t want Maya to see him in such a disheveled state and worry. So, he obeyed the queen and took a quick bath. Once he was clean and dressed in new clothes, he said, “Take me to Maya.”
“Follow me.”
As they walked through the corridors, Cassian asked, “How is Maya?”
“She was already weak, and the marriage mark weakened her further, so her recovery will be slower. Moreover, having completely broken the bond she had with me, I can’t do much.”
“And the baby?”
That was a question Cassian had tried not to think about out of fear. Pregnant women were delicate; anything could be harmful to the baby. Maya had suffered a lot because of the marriage mark, and he was terrified that they might have lost the baby.
“The baby is fine, well attached to its mother.”
When the queen said that, Cassian felt he could breathe again. “Thank God.”
The queen continued walking without saying another word until they reached the room where Maya was. When Cassian entered and saw her, he ran to her.
“Maya!”
He took her face in his hands and asked while scanning her body to make sure she had no injuries, “Are you alright? Does anything hurt?”
Maya hugged him to calm him, as Cassian looked anxious. “I’m fine. Nothing hurts; I’m just a bit
tired.”
Cassian embraced her and said, “Thank God. You have no idea how worried I was. I feared something had happened to you, that something had happened to both of you.”

“We are fine, although I don’t understand what happened. I felt fine, and suddenly, I felt like I was dying.”
Cassian was about to explain what had happened when the queen interrupted them.
“Maya, you should rest. I only brought him so you could see that I haven’t done anything to him.”
Cassian clung to Maya. “I won’t leave her.”
“You can’t stay in this room. It’s called the healing room for a good reason; only sick people can be
here. You can wait outside if you wish.”
Cassian didn’t want to leave Maya, but he also didn’t want to interfere with her recovery. “How long
will she have to stay in this place?”
“Maybe a few days or a few weeks. That depends on the person.”
Cassian kissed Maya’s forehead and said, “I will be outside. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to
ask.”
Maya held onto Cassian’s hand and said, “Stay a little longer, just a little longer.”
Cassian looked at the Fairy Queen, as if asking for her approval, something that caught Maya’s attention since Cassian had always complained about the Fairy Queen and shown his hatred towards her. But at that moment, it seemed that something had changed.
The Fairy Queen turned and headed for the door. “Do as you wish, just don’t stay together for too
long.”
When the Fairy Queen left the room, Maya asked, “What happened while I was asleep?”
“Nothing, I just waited for you to wake up in another room.”
“You treat the queen differently. Why? I thought you hated her.”
“I don’t hate her; I just hated that she tried to keep you away from me.”
“And you
think she won’t try anymore?”
“No, she can’t do anything to separate us now because the bond that united you two is no longer
there.”
“You managed to make her release me, to break our bond.”
Cassian shook his head. “It was more something we did unintentionally. The queen said the bond that united you two couldn’t be broken, only changed.”
“And what does that mean?”

Cassian saw the marriage mark peeking out from the neckline of her dress. He placed his hand on Maya’s chest, over the marriage mark, and said, “The marriage mark has linked your life to mine.”
“I know that already, although I don’t understand why I have it on my chest and not on my hand.”
“It seems that marriage marks act differently on fairies. Your mark has united your life with mine.”
Cassian took Maya’s hand and placed it on his chest, over his own marriage mark. “Now our hearts beat at the same time, but when one stops, the other will too. If I had known this would happen, I…”
Cassian looked devastated and distressed as he spoke. Maya kissed him and said, “I chose to marry you. I chose this, so change that expression. I will go with you until death. To me, it seems
romantic.”
“That’s not romantic, it’s…”
Cassian caressed Maya’s cheek. “In the end, it ends up doing the same thing the Fairy Queen did, limiting your freedom.”
“That’s not true, because I gave myself to you voluntarily and would do it again, because I love you. Living for me means you.”

Part II: Broken Relationships
Barto went to look for his father, who was standing in the garden where Maya had disappeared, staring intently at the tree through which the fairy queen had opened the portal to the land of the fairies. Ryan seemed taciturn and introspective, maintaining a tense silence and appearing deeply pained. Barto had only seen his father like this once before, and that was when his mother had
died.
“Dad, are you okay?”
“I can’t stop thinking about your sister, wondering if she’s alright.”
“The fairy queen seemed willing to help her; I think she’ll be fine.”
“This is my fault.”
“What?”
“I knew that unions between fairies and humans were forbidden, but I still didn’t stop your sister.
This is all my fault.”
“What do you mean by that, Dad?”
“Maya was fine until the marriage ceremony ended. I believe her pain was caused by the marriage
mark.”
“I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I’m not going to keep asking myself pointless questions, I’m going to find my own answers. I’ll go to the land of the fairies and bring Maya back.”
“No, don’t do anything unnecessary.”
“Are you not going to do anything to save Maya?”
“No, and neither will you.”
“I don’t understand. Don’t you care about my sister?”
“I do care, but there’s nothing I can do, and what you can do won’t make Maya happy.”
Ryan placed a hand on his son’s shoulder and said, “If what you told me is true, Cassian will find a way to bring Maya back. But if you go, you won’t be able to return. I don’t want to lose you, Barto, so don’t do anything foolish.”
Barto clenched his fists tightly, feeling extremely frustrated that he couldn’t help his sister. “I promised Mom that I would take care of Maya.”
“And I promised her that I would take care of both of my children. I know how you feel; I feel the

“Yes, even though it doesn’t seem like it, waiting is for the brave.”
“Dad, can I ask you a question?”
“Of course.”

“Mom was human, you loved her. I know for sure because you show your pain every day for having lost her. But why did you never marry her?”
“Out of fear. I was afraid of losing her.”
“You lost her anyway. Do you regret not marrying her?”
“Well… maybe a little, but you can’t go back in time. I have to look forward and live, because I’m sure that’s what she would have wanted.”
After breakfast, Abril went to find Kiara, who looked both upset and worried.
“Has something happened?”
“No.”
“I’ve spoken with Alessandro; we can leave whenever you want.”
“Then let’s go. It’s not like I have anything better to do here.”
Kiara returned to her room, took some of her things, packed them in a bag, and said, “Let’s go.”
“Did you say goodbye to Barto?”
“He doesn’t care, so why should I say goodbye to him?”
“Did you two have a fight?”
“No, he just made it clear that he doesn’t choose me, so let’s go.”
Kiara was fuming, and although she said otherwise, it seemed she had had a heated argument with Barto. Even though she was in a hurry to go to the land of the fairies, she didn’t want her cousin to leave angry with the man she loved.
“You should talk to Barto before you go. You came all the way here just to be with him. If you disappear without saying anything, you’ll make him suffer.”
“For him to suffer, I would have to matter to him, but that’s not the case, so it doesn’t matter. We’ve

Abril and Kiara met with Alessandro and Lissana in the garden where Maya and Cassian had disappeared. To Kiara’s surprise, Barto and his father were also there. When Barto saw the bag on
Kiara’s shoulder, he asked, “Where are you going?”
Kiara was still hurt and very angry from the conversation she had had with Barto, so she ignored his question. It was Abril who answered, “We’re going to the land of the fairies.”
“Were you planning to leave without saying anything?” Barto asked Kiara, but she continued to
resist answering.
“Kiara, please! Talk to me!”
“A while ago, you made it very clear that you don’t care what I have to say.”
“Kiara, I…”
“Before you say anything, you should know that it’s not because I’m following you. Yesterday, Abril asked me to accompany her to the land of the fairies. You told me this morning.”
“Barto is not going to the land of the fairies,” Ryan responded instead of his son.
Kiara looked at Barto. “I was going to tell you when I got back to the room.”
“It doesn’t matter anymore. That doesn’t change what you think about me.”
“Kiara…”
“I don’t care what you have to say. You made it very clear that I will never be your priority. I was a fool to think you loved me the same way I love you.”
Barto approached Kiara, trying to take her hand, but she didn’t allow it. She slapped his hand away and said, “Don’t touch me.”
“I love you, Kiara.”
“I was willing to give up everything for you. I was willing to fight my mother if necessary, but you… for you, your family is the most important thing, and apparently, I’m not part of it.”
Kiara turned around and started to walk away. Barto ran after her, grabbed her arm, and said, “Please stop!”
“I don’t want to. I don’t want to keep talking to you. Can’t you see how much this hurts me?”
