Part II: Tears and Goodbyes

When Abril heard that Cosset was under attack, she felt as if the air had been knocked out of her. She knew she should have returned sooner, but she was afraid to leave her little one, which is why she had hesitated for so long.
“Why didn’t you tell me my kingdom is under attack?”
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t know either. This pixie just informed me.”
Abril looked at the small fairy and asked, “What’s happening?”
The little fairy glanced at the queen, and upon seeing her approval, began to speak. “It seems some villages were attacked by monsters.”
“Does Alessandro know?”
“Yes, he and Barto will depart tomorrow morning with their knights to confront them.”
Without a second thought, Abril said to the fairy queen, “I must return to my kingdom.”
“This is your fight; I won’t stop you.”
“I’ll go prepare to leave.”
Abril slightly bowed her head and said, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me and for accepting my
daughter. I’ll leave her in your care.”
“She will be well taken care of, I assure you. You can go in peace.”
“Could you open a portal for me?”
“Prepare yourself. When you’re ready to leave, come find me, and I’ll send you back to your kingdom.”
“Thank you very much.”
Abril thanked her again before leaving the throne room. She hurried to find Lissana and the others. They
were gathered in the garden, and when they saw Abril approaching in a rush, they asked, “Aby, what’s
wrong?”
“I must return to Cosset immediately. Kiara, you’re coming with me.”
Kiara didn’t feel ready to face Barto, so she said, “I think I’ll stay a few more days here.”
“The kingdom of Cosset is being attacked by monsters.”
“What?!”
Cassian was very agitated upon hearing that Cosset was under attack by monsters. “I should go back too,
Lessan-”
Abril shook her head. “Don’t. Maya and you are connected; she’s pregnant and needs to stay calm. Don’t

worry about us; we’ll be fine. Kiara is on our side. We’ll be two bearers of light fighting against the
monsters.”
“But I don’t want to go back,” Kiara said.

Abril told her, “We let you come with us because you promised to help if necessary, so don’t complain.”
“I suppose I have no other choice.”
Abril took Lissana in her arms, hugged her, and said, “Mommy has to leave.”
Lissana didn’t understand what her mother was saying; she just smiled.
“As soon as I can, I’ll come back for you, my little one, I promise.”
Abril wished her farewell could have been longer, but she couldn’t afford it; she had to return to Cosset
before Alessandro left to face those monsters. After giving Lissana several kisses, Abril handed her over
to Maya and said, “Take good care of her.”
“You don’t even need to ask, we’ll take good care of her.”
“Thank you.”
“Aby, tell my brother I’m sorry for not being there when he needs me the most.”
“Don’t feel guilty for not helping; you’ve fought many battles. Your place is by Maya’s side. I don’t want to waste more time; I’ll go get my things. Kiara, you should do the same.”
