Abril cried in Alessandro’s arms for a good while. She cried until her tears ran dry. Throughout the entire
time she wept, Alessandro remained silent, gently patting her back in an attempt to console her. When she
finally managed to calm down, Abril asked him, “Have you seen Kiara?”
“After crossing the portal, she said you would come and then left, she seemed to be in a hurry.”
“I missed you.”
“Was it many days in the land of the fairies?”
“Yes, and here?”
“Only three days, but it felt like an eternity. Without you, the palace became lonely.”
It was nighttime, and the entire palace was silent, but Abril knew what Alessandro was referring to–a
place without their daughter would be incredibly lonely.
“And I think it will be that way for some time.”
A tear rolled down Abril’s cheek. Alessandro wiped it away with his long fingers and asked, “How is
Lissana? Did she cry when you left her?”
Abril shook her head. “Our little one bid me farewell with a smile.”
“She takes after you, just as strong and brave. She will be fine.”
“I know, but that doesn’t lessen the sadness in my heart.”
“Nor in mine. It pains me not to see her grow, to miss her first words, her first steps. But it would hurt more to lose her. This is only temporary; one day we will all be together and happy.”
Abril had already seen that future where they were happy, so she did not doubt that one day all this would
end, that one day they would be happy.
“I know.”
“It’s late; we should get some rest. I will leave very early tomorrow.”
“I will go with you.”
“I wish you wouldn’t.”
“No, you will face monsters. I cannot let you go alone.”
“I suppose I won’t be able to change your mind.”
“No, you won’t. So just accept that I will go with you.”
“Alright.”
“Kiara will also come with us.”

“I would prefer she stay at the palace in case Cira shows up. There is a key to Hades here, and I worry she might try to steal it while we’re gone.”
“I suppose you’re right.”
Alessandro took Abril in his arms and said, “Let’s go to sleep; we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow.”
Abril felt her strength leaving her, so she did not complain. She rested her head on Alessandro’s shoulder
and remained silent.
When Alessandro reached the room, Abril had already fallen asleep. He gently laid her on the bed.
Seeing her cry so inconsolably had broken his heart. He only wished to make his family happy, but he still
couldn’t manage it. He felt helpless for not being able to prevent his beloved from shedding such bitter
tears, helpless for not being able to protect his family, so much so that he even wondered when he had
become so useless.
Alessandro leaned down and kissed Abril’s forehead. “I love you. I hope one day I can make you happy,” he
whispered softly, not wanting to wake her. Then he lay down beside her and watched her sleeping face
until sleep overcame him.

Kiara stood in front of Barto’s door for a long time before she gathered the courage to knock. When Barto
opened the door, he was very surprised to see Kiara.
“Kiara! Is Maya back too?”
Kiara understood that Barto was worried about his sister, but it still hurt to know she would never be his
first priority. “Where is Maya?”
“She didn’t return; she is still in the land of the fairies.”
“What?”
“But she didn’t stay against her will. She stayed in the land of the fairies because it’s the best place for her
to fully recover.”
“She hasn’t recovered yet?”
“Maya’s condition was very bad. She’s fine now, but the safest place for her is there.”
“Then it was her choice to stay?”
“Yes, it was her choice, so don’t do anything stupid. She doesn’t need to be saved.”
Kiara handed him the letter Maya had written. “Maya asked me to give you this.”
“Thank you.”
“Don’t go tomorrow to fight monsters; it’s dangerous.”
“Although it may not seem like it, I am agile and skilled with a sword.”

“If those monsters keep advancing, they will reach my city and attack the people I care about. I want to fight for those who can’t, to protect what I love.”
“You love too many things, and it seems I am the last of them all.”
“That’s not true, Kiara.”
“You put everyone before me. No matter how much I ask you to stay with me, you won’t because I’m not
that important to you.”
Kiara began to walk away, but Barto followed her. He slid a hand around her waist, the other hand climbed
up her neck, took her chin, and forced her to look at him.
“Kiara, that’s not true. You are very important to me. I love you more than you can imagine.”
Kiara felt her blood pulsing strongly through every inch of her body. She parted her lips as Barto brought
his face closer… but just as their lips were about to touch, she pushed him away and took a step back.
“No,” she said in a thick voice, trying not to give in as she saw Barto’s perplexed face at her rejection.
“I love you, Barto, but we can never be.”
“I know I made a mistake, Kiara. At that moment, I wasn’t thinking clearly, but I love you and want to be
with you. I want to marry you and spend the rest of my life by your side.”
“That will never happen! Fairies can’t marry humans or elves.”
“Why not?”
“Because the marriage mark for fairies is like a mark of slavery that binds your life to your partner, literally.
I don’t want that, and I don’t want to keep loving you because your love and mine are very different. I will always be the one who loves more and ends up losing, and I don’t want that. It’s best we end this once and
for all. Let’s stop hurting each other, Barto.”
“I don’t want to lose you, Kiara.”
“There was never a future for us. We were foolish to think otherwise. An elf and a half–fairy can never be
together.”
Kiara turned away. Barto tried to follow her, but when Kiara heard his footsteps behind her, she turned and said, “Barto, I want to be with someone willing to give everything for me, and that someone is not you. So
stop insisting.”
After saying that, she walked away with long strides until she disappeared down the hallway, not wanting
Barto to see her break down.

Part II: An Excellent Warrior
The next day, Abril woke up very early and went to look for Kiara. When she reached her room, she found her sitting on the balcony, gazing into the distance. Kiara seemed lost in her thoughts, a look of sadness
on her face.
“Kiara, are you okay?”
“Yes. Is it time to leave?”
“That’s what I came to talk to you about. I want you to stay at the palace. Here is one of Hades‘ keys. Cira
might be using the monsters to get our attention; it could be a trap to try to steal the key while we’re away.”
“Are you sure about that?”
“No, but I’ll be more at ease if you stay in the palace and guard the key.”
“Alright, I’ll stay.”
“Thank you.”
“Have a safe journey and come back soon.”
“By the way, did you manage to talk to Barto?”
“I did.”
“And how did it go?”
“It’s
over between us.”
“I thought you would make up with him when we returned.”
“He and I are not meant to be
gether. There’s no point in dragging out the inevitable.”
“What nonsense are you talking about? Destiny? Who says destiny is written? We each decide how our
lives will be. Don’t give up before you’ve even fought.”
“ΐου I say that because your love is reciprocated.”
“And so is yours. Do you know the look on Barto’s face when we left for the land of the fairies? He loves
you, maybe not in the way you want, but I’m sure he loves you.”
“You should go; you’re running late.”
“I thought you would stop running away when we returned, but it seems I was wrong.”
“What I do with my relationship is none of your business, so mind your own affairs, and I’ll mind mine.”
“I suppose I was too intrusive. I’m sorry, I’ll leave now or I’ll be late.”
As Abril left the room, she headed to the palace entrance where Alessandro was gathered with the knights, and a few wizards were also present. When she approached, everyone greeted her and bowed.

Alessandro asked her:
“Did you talk to Kiara?”
“Yes, she agreed to stay.”
Among the knights, Abril spotted Barto.
“Is Barto coming too?”
“He insisted on coming; I couldn’t refuse.”
“I suppose that’s why Kiara was so upset.”
“What?”
“Nothing, forget it. Is everything ready?”
“Yes, we were just waiting for you.”
Abril saw Sirius but didn’t see Taren.
“Is Taren not coming?”
“I asked him to stay and protect the castle along with Kiara.”
Sirius approached and said:
“We are ready; we can leave whenever you want.”
“Then let’s go. Prepare the scrolls.”
Sirius handed them a teleportation scroll and said:
“The first village to be attacked is Riera, so we’ll go there first if His Majesty agrees.”
“That sounds good, so let’s go.”
