“This was the only way they had to save their daughter. You’ve seen how much power she has. If she were in the human world, her body wouldn’t have been able to handle so much power.”
“I know. I know that her being here was the only way Aby and Lessan found to save their daughter, even though that decision broke their hearts.”

Every day that Abril communicated with Maya through the mirror and saw how much her daughter had grown, she couldn’t help but cry when she ended the communication. She longed to be with her little one, having missed her first steps and words. She only wished to run to her, but she couldn’t; the monsters continued to attack the kingdom. Thankfully, she hadn’t encountered any human–shaped monsters again, which she was grateful for, knowing they were not easy to defeat. She still knew nothing about Cira, letting out a long sigh and saying to herself, “When will all this end? When will I be able to be with my daughter again?”
Alessandro entered the tent, embraced his wife, and said, “Don’t despair; this will end soon.”
“Soon? I don’t know if that’s true anymore. Sometimes I just wish Cira would appear and attack me so I could end it all, but things are never that simple, are they?”
“No.”
Abril leaned against Alessandro and asked, “Where are we going now?”
“We’re going to the city of Zather.”
The city of Zather was the territory of Duchess Mollin and the place where Abril had left Otis and Joe.
“The city of Zather is under attack!”
“Not yet, but its surroundings are. That’s why I want to go. We’ll stay at Duchess Mollin’s mansion; it will be
easier to move from there, and we can also get a good rest.”
“I hope the duchess and the children are okay. They’ve already suffered so much; I don’t want them to go through anything similar again.”
“We’ll make sure nothing bad happens to them, that they don’t face more horrors.”
“Can’t we leave today?”
“No, the knights are tired; they need rest, and so do you”
“I’m fine.”
“Even so, we don’t know what we’ll encounter. Fighting monsters is already difficult during the day; at
night, it would be suicide.”
“I suppose you’re right.”
“Yes, so let’s rest. We’ll leave very early in the morning.”
Although Alessandro had told her to rest, Abril couldn’t. She was too worried, unable to stop thinking about Duchess Mollin and the children, Joe and Otis, wondering if they were safe.
The next day, Abril woke up very early and nudged Alessandro to wake him. She wanted to leave as soon
as possible.

“Lessan, wake up.”
“What’s wrong, Aby?”

“Dawn has broken; we must go. I want to get there immediately and make sure the duchess and the children are okay.”
Alessandro got up immediately and started putting on his armor. “I think it’s best to go to Duchess Mollin first. She can provide more information about what’s happening, and you can see that they’re alright.”
“Thank you, Lessan.”
“I know you wouldn’t be at ease if we didn’t go first, and it’s dangerous to be distracted during a battle.”
“Those children have suffered enough. I want the rest of their childhood to be peaceful, without more
scars on their hearts.”
They set off immediately for the city of Zather. When they arrived at Duchess Mollin’s mansion, Abril felt relieved to see no signs of darkness; the mansion had not been attacked. A servant ran to inform the
duchess that the king and queen had just arrived. She hurried to the entrance to greet them, bowing as
she spoke.
“Welcome to my home, Your Majesties.”
“Hello, Duchess, long time no see,” Abril said, with a certain sweetness in her eyes, as this woman had been the first to accept her as queen, even when her position was unclear.
“It is a pleasure and an honor to have you in my home again, Your Majesty.”
Otis and Joe came running out of the mansion, throwing themselves at Abril, greeting her with great
excitement.
“Sister, you’ve come to visit us,” they said in unison. The duchess turned pale and said, “Children, don’t do that. Haven’t I told you how to greet properly?”
Otis and Joe stepped back, bowed, and said, “Greetings to Her Majesty, the Queen.”
The duchess apologized to Abril, “I apologize for this lack of respect, Your Majesty. They are still very
enthusiastic.”
Abril looked at Otis and Joe; there was no trace of the malnourished children she had rescued from the streets. She stroked their heads, happy to see they were growing well and that their eyes shone with
happiness.
“Don’t worry about it, Duchess. They haven’t offended me. I’m glad to receive such a welcome.”
“They always ask me to invite you to come, but I know Your Majesty is a busy person.”
“They look very well. You’ve done a good job taking care of them.”
“They have brought life back to this duchy. Everyone in the mansion loves them dearly.”

Alessandro said to the duchess, “My men are hungry and tired. I hope you can provide them with a place
to rest.”
“Of course, Your Majesty. I apologize for not suggesting it earlier.”
