Part II: The Purpose of Monsters
Abril gripped her daggers tightly, waiting for the moment when that creature would attack her. But the creature did not move; it just watched her with a demonic smile that made her blood run cold. In fact, Abril felt that it was enjoying seeing her so tense and ready to fight. “Why doesn’t it attack? What is it waiting for?” she wondered, never taking her eyes off it. She knew how strong it was, and from the way it looked at her, she knew it was coming for her, but she still couldn’t understand why it didn’t attack. Amidst the chaos, they seemed to be the only ones who were calm.
A monster managed to reach Abril, and she reduced it to ashes with her flames. She had only taken her eyes off the creature for a moment, but that was all it needed to disappear. She began to move her head frantically from side to side, searching for it in the sea of monsters around her. When she found it again, it was already lunging at Alessandro, burying its claws in his abdomen–or at least that’s what Abril saw. She ran towards him, dodging the knights in her path. Sirius shouted for her to stop, but she didn’t; her mind was completely blocked, and all she could see was Alessandro and the creature attacking him.
When she reached them, Abril plunged one of her daggers into the creature’s neck and shouted, “Let go of my husband.” The creature continued to show her that perverse, malevolent smile. She positioned herself in front of Alessandro to protect him with her own body if necessary and asked him without taking her eyes off the creature, “Are you okay?”
“Aby, what are you doing here?” Alessandro’s reprimand told her he was fine, and she felt she could breathe again.
Suddenly, she felt something wrap around her ankle, but not quickly enough to foresee what would happen. She was dragged out of the barrier. She used her fire magic to try to free herself and succeeded, but it was too late. She was outside the barrier, surrounded by hundreds of monsters. She readied herself, holding her daggers high, and the creature that had been watching her spoke in a guttural, raspy voice. “I will kill you, bearer of light, and I will kill everyone around you.”
She covered her body in silver flames to prevent the other monsters from touching her. In the distance, she could hear Alessandro’s desperate shouts as he tried to make his way through the monsters to reach her. Abril couldn’t afford to be distracted, so she ignored him and focused all her attention on the creature in front of her.
“I suppose you also want revenge for killing your monster friends.”
“Yes, but that’s not the only reason. There are many more reasons why I want to kill you.”
“Like what?”
“You’re a nuisance, for starters. You’re preventing us from taking over this world. It has never taken us this long to conquer a world of inferior beings.”
“What?”
“That’s why I want to destroy you. Even if there are more insects like you to eliminate, once the gates of

“That won’t happen.”

“We have conquered many worlds, and I’ve heard that in every one of them, but none could stop us. What makes you think this one will?”
“Because in those worlds, we weren’t there,” Alessandro said as he swung his sword at the creature. But it stopped the blade with its hand. Abril took advantage of the moment to attack, stabbing her daggers into its arm. Its skin was tough, and she only managed to make a superficial wound, but it was enough to make
the creature release Alessandro’s sword.
The creature had been distracted, talking to Abril and not paying attention to Alessandro, who had
apparently used his wind magic to fly over the monsters and reach them. Alessandro continued to wield
his sword against the creature, and Abril did the same with her daggers covered in flames. The fight was difficult, especially because the monsters kept attacking them. The knights were still dealing with the
monsters far from them. Abril and Alessandro were alone; they had to finish off this creature themselves
as there was no one else who could help them.
Alessandro was strong, and Abril had greatly improved with her daggers, so the fight was not as unequal as the last time she had faced one of these creatures in the kingdom of Laios. She was stronger, and her
husband was no slouch either. Although the creature was strong and moved quickly, Abril’s light magic
attacks made it lose agility.
“Cut off its head!” Abril shouted as she stabbed her daggers into the creature’s back, causing the silver flames to engulf it completely. When Abril ducked, Alessandro did not hesitate to decapitate it. The
creature’s head rolled across the ground, and Abril continued to burn its body until it turned to ashes. She
then did the same to its head while Alessandro protected her from the remaining monsters. Once the
creature was destroyed, Abril unleashed her magic like a torrent, flooding the area with her silver flames
and consuming every trace of darkness nearby.
When she finished, she felt dizzy and was about to fall, but Alessandro caught her and asked, “Are you
okay?”
“Yes, just a little tired.”
When there were no more monsters left, Sirius approached them with the knights and said, “I think it’s best
we retreat.”
“But the well,” Abril said. “I haven’t purified it yet.”
“Forget it. You’ve used too much magic; you look pale. It’s best we leave. We don’t know what else we
