Maya was combing Lissana’s hair. She got along very well with Uzziel, but she wondered why he had said he wasn’t her best friend when he talked to Abril and Alessandro.
“Lissana, who is your best friend?”
“Tarik,” Lissana confirmed again.
“And Uzziel?”
“Uzziel is not my friend. Uzziel is my family.”
“But he can also be your friend.”
“But the pixies told us that you can only have one best friend, that everyone else is family or
acquaintances.”
Damn pixies, you’ll see when I catch you, thought Maya as she tightened her grip on the comb. “And why did you choose Tarik as your best friend?”
“Yes, although it’s also because I like him. We’ve even thought about getting married when we grow up.”
Maya thought, If Alessandro heard Lissana’s words, he would surely have a fit. “Lissana, do you know what marriage is?”
“It’s promising to always be with your best friend, to support each other at all times, to play and have fun always.”
“Who told you that?”
“Tarik’s father told him, and Tarik told me. I want Tarik to always be my friend, so we promised to get
married.”

Maya felt tenderness at Lissana’s response, though she also wanted to punch Fay in the face for giving such an ambiguous answer about marriage to his son. However, she remembered that on some occasion, Fay had given that meaning to marriage, and deep down, it wasn’t wrong; it was just incomplete. Lissana was still a child, so it didn’t matter what meaning she gave to marriage. When she grew a bit older, Maya
would explain it properly.
“Aunt Maya, why is Dad mad at Tarik? Why doesn’t he want us to be together and be friends?”
“That’s because your dad loves you very much and is afraid that Tarik will take all your attention and
affection.”
