Part II: An Undeserved Love
Alessandro was about to take a sip of wine from his glass when an earthquake began to shake everything
around him. Glasses tipped over, some paintings fell, and a few vases tipped over and broke.
“What’s going on?”
Everyone asked, bewildered, since they didn’t know what was happening. When everything calmed down, Alessandro asked everyone if they were okay.
The children were frightened, and Cassian had spilled wine on his shirt, but since no one was hurt, they
nodded.
Cassian said, “Looks like we’re all okay.”
Alessandro hurried to the balcony to see what had happened.
Kiara asked Abril, “Did you feel it?”
“Yes.”
Even though she wasn’t nearby, Abril could sense that something dark and malevolent had caused the
tremor.
Alessandro came back inside and said to them.
“The barriers are intact, I don’t think it’s an attack from outside.”
“It must have been inside the barriers, but it seems like an attack from Cira. I could feel something dark
and malevolent to the north,” said Abril. Kiara agreed.
“I felt it too, although it seems to have vanished; it was as if something with great power was released, but
now it’s gone.
Alessandro looked at Lissana, and Abril knew what he was thinking without him saying a word.
They needed to send Lissana back to the Fairyland. But it wasn’t something he wanted to do immediately, so he focused on his kingdom, as that tremor must have caused problems in the city.
“Aby, stay with Lissana. I need to check on the city and see if they need help; the tremor might have
caused issues.”
“Alright, take care,” Kiara said to him.
“Let me come with you; if there are any injured, I can help a lot,” Cassian said.
“I’ll come with you too.”
Cassian looked at Maya and said to her, “Look after Uzziel.”
“Yes.”

Alessandro quickly organized the knights and soldiers, then they headed to the city. The tremor wasn’t strong enough to topple houses, but some animals had been frightened and caused quite a commotion. The injured were those who had fallen or were in dangerous spots during the tremor, where wooden signs fell, or were swept away by the crowd and ended up on the ground.
They spent the entire day helping out in the city, and when night came, Alessandro returned to the palace with Cassian. As they walked through the corridors, Cassian asked him, “What are you planning to do with Lissana? Are you sending her back to the land of the fairies?”
“I don’t know, it’s something I need to discuss with Aby, although honestly, I think it’s best if she goes back. I’m afraid we might be attacked while she’s here. And what will you do?”
“I’ll stay here a bit longer to help you as much as I can, but honestly, I’d prefer if Maya and Uzziel went back
to the land of the fairies.”
Alessandro let out a long sigh and said to him, “There’s no need for you to stay, Barto will remain at the
palace while Kiara is here, and he’s a good warrior. I suppose it’s because he’s half fairy.”
“In other words, he’s my replacement.”
“Something like that. I’ve asked him to join our knights, but he keeps turning it down, saying he’d rather lead the information guild.”
“Are you sure you don’t want me to stay?”
“I don’t want you to be separated from your family. Besides, if you’re with Lissana, I’m more at ease. The main battle will surely take place here, but honestly, there’s no truly safe place. Also, I’d like you to speak with the fairy queen and ask for her collaboration, as we’ll surely need it when the war begins. I’ve also thought about asking for help from the other kingdoms.”
“Do you think the others will want to be part of this?”
“The upcoming war isn’t just against our kingdom; it’s against the whole world. If we want to win, we’ve got
to unite and march under one banner.”
“I suppose it’s not a war we can win alone.”
Alessandro put his arm around his brother’s neck and said to him.
“Enjoy your life a bit more in the fairyland utopia, but don’t neglect your training.”
“I never do, and even if I wanted to, Maya wouldn’t allow it. Even though she seems calm, she’s super
competitive; we’re always training.”
“I suppose being a mother hasn’t changed that.”
“It only intensified it; she trains even more because she says she must be strong for Uzziel, to be able to
protect him.”
“By the way, I’ve never seen Maya use magic. Does she have any magical powers?”

“That’s because she doesn’t know how to control it very well. The fairy queen is teaching her, although
Maya had to beg her to do it.”
“What kind of magic does she use?”
“To be honest, I don’t really know how to explain the type of magic she uses. It’s a rare type, apparently
inherited from the fairies, but she’s more into knives and swords.”
“Yes, I think that suits her better.”
“I don’t think she could beat Aby; her power is overwhelming. It’s surprising that King Venobich despised
her for not having magic.”
“However, it was thanks to that I was able to marry her. King Venobich sent her here to die, thinking his daughter was useless, someone he could discard. Back then, I was full of resentment and hatred and
thought about killing her several times.”
“And it’s good you didn’t, now she’s the love of your life.”
“Yes, I’m glad I didn’t let pain and hatred take over me.”
When they passed by Cassian’s room, they both stopped. Before Alessandro left, Cassian said to him,”
Lessan, do you still blame yourself for what happened to our brothers?”
“Why do you ask that?”
“Answer, do you still think it was your fault?”
“Even though time has passed, there are things I will never be able to forget, and I will never stop feeling
guilty. If I hadn’t been so immature and childish, maybe our brothers would be here.”
Alessandro started to walk away and said, “Good night Cassian.”
Cassian said to him, “Lessan.”
Alessandro stopped for a moment to hear what his brother had to say.
“It wasn’t your fault that King Venobich was the one who killed them.”
Alessandro said nothing and left. He went to his room, and when he entered, he saw Abril and Lissana sleeping in each other’s arms. He sat on the edge of the bed, brushed a lock of hair away from Aby’s face, and tucked it behind her ear. It had been a long time since Alessandro thought about the past, and that was because it only brought him pain. When his siblings died, Alessandro went through hell; Abril had saved him, even though she never knew it, since it was something he never talked about.
Alessandro kissed Abril’s forehead and whispered gently, “Thank you for saving me and bringing me the peace I desperately needed, for giving me your love, even when I didn’t deserve it.”
