Maya was about to fall asleep when she heard a knock on the door. It was Abril, who peeked her head through the door and asked, “Can I come in?”

“Of course, come in.”

Abril approached, sat on the chair next to the bed, and asked her, “How are you feeling?”

“Better.”

Abril stared at her as if she knew she was lying. Maya sighed heavily and replied, “Alright, I feel awful, but

I’m better than when I arrived.”

Abril took Maya’s hand and infused a large amount of magic into it. Maya felt a little better, but not enough

to say she was fine.

“My magic doesn’t work on you.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“I’ll tell you, but don’t tell Cassian. I don’t want to worry him.”

“I’ll keep what you say a secret.”

That was the first time Maya was going to talk about what was happening to her with someone other than the little fairy that appeared like a ghost whenever she was alone.

“My life itself is being drained by the fairyland, or at least that’s what they told me.”

“What?”

“When I made the oath to the queen, my life and soul became bound to her, as well as to the fairyland.”

“But the queen set you free.”

“Once you make that oath, you cannot undo it. The queen freed me from my chains, but not from the bond

that ties me to her.”

“I will speak to the queen of the fairies. I will make her-”

“That won’t do anything. Not even the queen can undo the bond that ties us.”

“Then what will happen to you?”

“I will die.”

The little fairy that followed Maya everywhere appeared before Abril and said,

“If she goes back to the fairyland that won’t happen. Her energy and vitality will be restored upon

returning.”

“Shut up, pixie!” Maya shouted, slightly annoyed.

Abril became interested in what the little fairy had said and asked,

“So, she just has to go back?”

“Yes, she just has to go back, and she’ll recover. She’ll have a long life, she’ll live for centuries.”

“I’m not going back,” Maya shouted, giving the little fairy a deathly glare.

“Why are you refusing to go back, Maya?” Abril asked, as she didn’t understand why she was so stubbornly refusing to return to the fairy realm.

“The fairy queen will let me return, but what this pixie hasn’t told you is that she’ll never let me out again. I’ll have a long life, but without Cassian. I don’t want that–I want to be with the man I love, even if it won’t

last long.”

Abril hugged Maya. As her warm arms wrapped around her, Maya couldn’t help but cry. Until now, she had been putting up a strong front, but she couldn’t take it anymore. She was scared–afraid of death–but she feared living a whole life without her love even more. Cassian had penetrated so deeply into her heart that being separated from him would be like death itself.

Abril stayed hugging her until Maya let out everything she had been keeping to herself. In part, Abril felt

identified with her because she had also been hiding something from Alessandro. When Maya finally

calmed down, Abril told her,

“We’ll find a way to fix this, Maya. You’re not going to die, and you’re not going to give up Cassian.”

“I truly wish I could believe that, but no matter how hard I try, my reasoning betrays me and tells me there’s no way out. That no matter the path I take, the end will be the same.”

“I wish I could do something to help you…”

“You’re already helping me, to be honest. This is the first time I’ve cried since I found out what was

happening to me–since I learned I would never truly be free. I had been putting up a strong front, and I

think it was consuming me. Thank you for listening to me and staying by my side. I feel a little better now.”

“I will always be there for you, so if you need someone to vent to or a shoulder to cry on, just let me know.”

Maya wiped the tears from her cheeks and said to her, “Thank you, Aby. And if someday you’re going

through something difficult, I’ll be there for you too. I’m good at listening and keeping secrets.”

Actually, Abril wanted to tell her that she was also hiding secrets, but Maya already had enough with her

own problems. She didn’t want to burden her with hers.

As they let go, Alessandro could see the dark shadows under his brother’s eyes, and he got a little scared, thinking that maybe Cassian was sick.

“Cas, you don’t look good at all. I’ll call the doctor to examine you. No, wait, I’ll call Abril.”

Cassian stopped his brother and said, “It’s not necessary, I’m fine.”
