Leo looked as if he wanted to kill Cassian and said, “I’ll be keeping an eye on you, little
prince.”
When Leo left, Cassian asked, “Does everyone here know who I am?”
“Not everyone, Darren is asleep.”
Maya pointed to a man sleeping two tables away.
“I guess that’s why you all are called the information guild.”
“That’s right.”
Maya sat in front of Cassian and asked, “Now then, why have you come?”
“I want more information about the elves.”
“That will cost you.”
“I know, this time I’m prepared.”

Cassian replied as he placed a bag on the table. It was smaller than the one he had given her the first time he was there. She said, “It seems you’re less prepared this time.”
“Open the bag.”
Maya weighed it, then opened the bag. Inside there were no gold coins but diamonds. She
said, “Nice stones.”
“It will be enough for you to read me a story.”
Maya smiled and said, “I suppose so, although next time bring gold, I like it more.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
Maya put the money in her bag. Cassian waited for her to take out the book, but she didn’t, so he asked her, “Why haven’t you taken out your book yet?”
“Do you want me to read it right now?”
“Of course.”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t.”
“Why not? I’ve already paid you.”
“I know, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to read the book now.”

“I want you to read it now. I’m in a bit of a hurry.”

“Well, you’ll have to wait another day. I didn’t bring my book because I had gone out and didn’t want to lose it.”
“Why don’t you go get it?”
“Because I’m tired, I’ve been out all day. I just got back.”
“But…”
“If you want me to read you that story, you’ll just have to wait. Although I warn you that I don’t return what I’ve been given. If you don’t want to wait until tomorrow, that’s your problem. I’m not going to return the payment.”
Cassian sighed heavily and said, “I guess I have no other options.”
“You’re right, you don’t.”
“Do you know of any nearby inns?”
Maya extended her hand, and Cassian took a coin from his pouch and said to her.
“Are we starting now?”
“That’s how the information guild works. You should know that by now.”
“I had a slight hope that this time would be different.”
“You’re either an idiot or just naive, I’m not sure which.”
“Can you tell me where I can find an inn or a place to stay?”
“Two blocks down you’ll find an inn.”
Cassian stood up, tired from waiting all day in an uncomfortable chair, and was glad to stretch his legs. Cassian said goodbye and told her.
“I’ll see you tomorrow. Don’t forget to bring your book.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll bring it without fail tomorrow.”
After Cassian left, Leo approached Maya and asked her.
“What did the prince come for?”
“He paid me well to read him a story.”

“A story?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“What story will you tell him?”
“That’s not your concern.”
Maya replied as she stood up.
“Maya.”
Maya passed by Leo and said to him.
“I know you care about me, Leo, but we’re just friends. Don’t cross the line.”

The next day, Cassian woke up very early, went to the tavern, but it was still closed, so he had to return to the inn where he was staying. Upon entering his room, he was greatly surprised
to see Maya, and she asked him.
“Where did you go so early?”
“I went to the tavern.”
“They’re still asleep. The tavern opens after noon.”
“That late?”
“They close late, so they have the right to rest. Sometimes, when Wallas can’t sleep, he opens early.”
“Do you know everyone by name?”
“In the guild, we’re all like a big family, so it’s natural that we know everyone’s name. But I’m not here to talk about myself; I’m here to read you a story, which is what you paid for.”
“I also want you to tell me everything you know about the elves.”
“Sure, but that won’t come cheap.”
Cassian took out another bag of money and replied.
“I think I can pay whatever you ask this time.”
“Alright, then I’ll tell you whatever you want, but after eating something. It’s still early, and I haven’t had breakfast yet.”
Cassian hadn’t had breakfast yet, so he didn’t complain; instead, he ordered breakfast to the

room. Shortly after, a tray full of fruit, cheese, fresh bread, honey, and butter was brought to them. They sat down to have breakfast by the window, from where they could see part of the city. Being so early, everything was silent, and the city still seemed to be asleep.
After they finished eating, Maya asked him.
“What exactly do you want to know about the elves?”
“Everything you know about them.”
“I know quite a few things, be a bit more specific.”
“Where is their kingdom?”
“That I don’t know, as no human knows. The elves are not allowed to tell, they keep everything related to finding their kingdom a secret, although some let slip something when they’re drunk, but not enough to know where it is.”
“What things?”
“Some have mentioned that to reach their kingdom, they must wait for the door to open and that only the elves can find those doors. For a human, it’s impossible.”
“Do
you know any elves?”
“Yes, for some years they’ve been visiting the information guild.”
“For what?”
“What do you think they do it for?”
“To obtain information.”
“That’s right.”
“What do they ask for information about?”
“They don’t usually make it very clear what exactly they’re looking for, but once I heard one mention that they’re looking for a princess.”
“A princess?”
“Yes, but they only talk to my brother or my father about the information they want. They usually ask for a lot of discretion, so I’m not very well–informed about that.”
“Haven’t you asked your brother?”
“Even if I ask, he won’t tell me. In the guild, we have a rule: we don’t reveal the information we

find about others, those are their secrets. For example, I won’t tell anyone what information you’ve asked me for, not even my brother.”
“Are there many elves looking for that princess?”
“I don’t know. They only send one or two elves to the guild to ask my brother to meet them at
a designated meeting point. As I’ve told you before, they handle everything with great discretion, and even in the information guild, very little is known about them.”
“You seem to know a lot about them.”
“I know a lot about them because I can speak and write their language.”
Maya took out the book she had been reading the day she met Cassian and said to him,
“This book talks a lot about them, although almost everything goes back to the beginning, to how things were before they went into hiding.”
“And how was it?”
“According to the book, everything was chaotic. Humans coveted the power of the elves, there were wars and darkness everywhere, so the elves decided they couldn’t coexist with us and used magic to hide their kingdom.”
The more Cassian listened, the more his curiosity grew, wondering what secrets lay hidden behind it all.
