The War Against the Darkness

Maya opened the book to the first page. Cassian was attentive to what she was going to say, however, she did not speak but got up from her chair.

Where are you going?

I want to show you something.

Maya placed a chair next to Cassian’s, cleared the items from the table, and showed him the first page of the book. Her slender fingers glided smoothly across the page, revealing a map of all the kingdoms. It was similar to the map they had hanging in Barto’s office, but this one had something different; there was one more kingdom.

This was supposed to be the world before the elves distanced themselves from humans and hid their kingdom.”

The kingdom of the elves was much larger than any of the other kingdoms. Cassian asked, That’s an incredibly large kingdom. How can they hide it?

I have no idea; the elves don’t talk much about their secrets.

Maya’s fingers continued moving across the map until they reached a part where there was only darkness. This darkness was located in the kingdom of Laios. That caught Cassian’s attention, and he asked, What does that darkness mean?

According to this book, darkness originated from humans and embodied greed, evil, and hatred in its purest form. Back then, they mentioned that darkness a lot, saying it was the weapon humans used to attack the elves.

Why did they attack them?

Because of the magic the elves possessed. It seems that their magic, compared to what we humans possess, is purer since we are beings born of human evil, but the elves are born of light and therefore their magic is light.

What you say doesn’t clear up my doubts; it only makes me want to know more.

You paid me to read the book to you, not to clear up your doubts. Besides, I couldn’t do it either. I felt the same way when I first read this book, and it hasn’t changed much now. There are many things in this book that are not clear.

Apparently, understanding what that book said was more complicated than Cassian had thought, so he asked about what he needed at that moment. Does this book mention anything about the union between an elf and a human?

Yes, there is something about that.

What does it say?

Maya flipped through the pages until she reached the part that spoke about what the prince was asking. According to this book, the union between an elf and a human was forbidden; it was considered an aversion. If such a union occurred and a baby was born, the elves would take those children to the kingdom of the elves, separating them from the human world because they were undefined creatures, creatures that did not belong to the Light, but neither to the darkness. Therefore, their power was greater than that of a normal elf and a human.

Why didn’t you tell me that the last time I asked you?

You asked me if a halfelf human could inherit the magic of light, and I said maybe. The elves have other types of magic; the magic of light is the purest of all and only the royal family possesses it. They are extremely proud and arrogant; I doubt they would accept mixing their precious blood with that of a human.

How do you know that?

It’s in the book. The elven royalty is worse than the human one, no offense. They are beings of light, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are benevolent. They consider humans inferior to them. Some of the elves who walked among humans were even called saints or gods; they always present themselves as glorious beings.

Really?

According to this book, yes. And why do you ask so many questions about a halfbreed between a human and an elf? Do you

know any halfelves?

That was something Cassian could not answer; it was a secret they had to keep very well. He replied, No, I was just asking out of curiosity. Until recently, I wasn’t even aware that elves

existed.

It’s true, although in reality, elves have been mentioned in ancient books. They weren’t called that; those who performed miracles were considered saints. Is there anything else you’d like

to know about them?

What else does that book say?

Not much really, it only mentions the war they fought and

Wait, a war?

Yes, against the humans, the humans were using the darkness to attack them, and at one point, they were on the verge of losing, but the High Lords, the elves who bore the light, united

their powers and overcame the darkness. After the war, they departed and concealed their kingdom.

Doesn’t it say anything else about that war?

No, the war is only briefly mentioned, there aren’t many details about it.

What else does that book say?

It briefly touches on their cultures and customs, nothing more.

I thought there would be more.

What were you expecting to find?

I don’t know.

In the end, Cassian was left with more questions, more intrigued than before. Maya closed the book and put it in her bag, and Cassian asked one last question.

Where can I find an elf? You’ve mentioned that they usually come for information.

Yes, but I don’t know where to find them. I’ve already told you, they only talk to my brother or my father.

I’d like to speak with your brother.

Look, my brother won’t tell you anything about them, and you could get me into trouble if they find out I’ve been talking to you about them.

Could you try to find out from your brother where I can find the elves who come to the guild for information?

Maya hesitated for a moment before responding, and Cassian said to her.

Please, this is very important to me.

Cassian looked at her with pleading eyes, and in the end, Maya agreed to help him.

Alright, although I can’t promise anything.
