Chapter 612
Everyone else chimed in to agree, but Julia stayed quiet. Because she knew better than anyone that the reason Maggie could throw money around like it was sothing had nothing to do with Johnny or Franklin. It was all her.
ust by standing on her own two feet, Maggie had already amassed the kind of wealth most people could only dream about.
The thought hit Julia like a stone dropping into still water. Her mood flatlined. The light went out of her eyes, her hand tightened around the armrest, and just ike that, every bit of the good mood she’d been in moments ago was gone.
Maggie couldn’t care less what anyone else was thinking. After going back and forth with a few other bidders, she walked away with the painting for just over eventy million.
ince the auction wrapped up, the man who owned the house came out from behind the curtain specifically to introduce himself to Maggie. His whole manner vas warm, almost deferential.
Vord had it this guy didn’t exactly make a habit of showing his face. Most years he didn’t appear even once. The fact that he’d gone out of his way to come meet Maggie personally said a lot about how much he respected her.
Vatching the auction house owner treat Maggie like she was royalty, the Browns and the Greens felt a little sting of jealousy. Just a little, though, nothing more. lecause they were convinced that someday, they’d be doing far better than Maggie ever would.

anice kept her expression neutral as she stood up. “Let’s head out.”
Sounds good.” Sophia said with a smile, but not before shooting Maggie one last look over her shoulder. Then she walked out with the rest of the Brown and
ireen families.
In the drive home after leaving the auction house, Maggie got a call from Isabella. Franklin had a free day tomorrow, she said, and he’d already agreed to go

le poured her a cup of tea as he said it and set it in front of her.
Maggie took it and thanked him, her voice flat.
omething in her tone made Franklin look at her a beat longer than usual.
Maggie didn’t acknowledge it. His curious gaze lingered on her face for two, maybe three seconds, then he looked away.
The two of them fell into the same rhythm as always. Mostly just doing the parenting thing, keeping up with whatever Isabella wanted to talk about, playing long for her sake. Between the two of them, though, there was almost nothing.
The meal was fine.
sabella, oblivious to the quiet chill running between the two adults, finished eating in high spirits and immediately wanted to go somewhere else.
Both Maggie and Franklin said yes.
Leaving the restaurant. Isabella happily grabbed Maggie’s hand and led the way up front. Franklin followed a step behind them.
