Iris hesitated for a moment, then spoke up carefully, “Lillian, Eleanor just got out of the ER. Can you please just… dial it back?” Lillian shot her a look. “You’re the one who never shuts up. You’ve had plenty to say in Graves Pack all these years. Maybe you should try keeping your mouth closed for once.”
Iris‘ face went tight.
She turned to Julian with wounded eyes, looking for backup.
Julian didn’t even glance her way.
Eleanor’s chest heaved. “Out. Both of you. Just get out.”
Julian grabbed Lillian’s arm. “Let’s go.”
‘Wait–where are you going?”
Eleanor’s voice shot up when she realized Julian was actually leaving.
She’d just been wheeled out of surgery, and her own son was walking out with his mate?
She’d heard the saying, “A son forgets his mother once he finds his mate,” but she never thought she’d live to see it happen to her.
The rage burning in her chest made her hatred for Lillian spread like wildfire.
Julian glanced back. “You seem fine to me. Why would we stay?”
‘Who said I’m fine?” The nerve of this boy. Was he trying to put her in the ground?
Julian shrugged. “If you were really that bad, you wouldn’t have the energy to yell at anyone.”
Eleanor sputtered, momentarily speechless.
ris wanted to step in, play the peacemaker, show everyone how gracious she could be.
But with Lillian clearly ready to snap at anyone who opened their mouth, she kept hers firmly shut.
Hilda stayed quiet too. She was still afraid Julian might freeze her assets with a single sentence.
So she just glared at Lillian from across the room.
The silence in that hospital room was suffocating.
Lillian broke it. “So is she fine or not? Are we leaving?”
Her voice had zero patience left.
Not like before. Back then, even though everyone knew she had a rebellious side, she’d at least played the part of a proper daughter–in–law on the surface. As long as you didn’t poke at that sore spot, she’d even tolerate the cold shoulders.

But now?
That one rebellious streak had spread through her whole system. If someone made her uncomfortable, she made them pay. Simple as that.
Eleanor snapped, “I told you to get out!”
“Then tell your son to let go of me.”
Lillian’s laugh was pure sarcasm.
Eleanor’s eyes dropped to Julian’s hand, still wrapped around Lillian’s wrist, and something inside her cracked.

Hilda and Iris got nothing
Through the open door, they could hear Julian’s voice drifting in. “Drink some soup first.
“This one doesn’t have peppers–you can eat it. And the pasta’s done right.”
His tone carried that particular warmth he reserved only for Lillian.
Eleanor felt lightheaded with fury.
Iris forced a brittle smile. “Eleanor, you should eat something.”
“You eat. I don’t have an appetite,”
She didn’t. Listening to Julian fuss over Lillian had filled her up on rage alone.
Iris didn’t have an appetite either.
