Chapter 111 The Poisoned Meal
Third Person POV:
George hesitated for a moment at her words. “Miss, are you saying?”
Lillian said, “We’re not getting involved with the pup. If he can actually get Mr. Gareth on board, that’s on him.”
They wouldn’t interfere,

It was just that James hadn’t taken a single case in two years. Julian wouldn’t find it easy to bring him in. Getting James to agree to anything was never simple.
George said, “Understood,”
Lillian said, “I’m hanging up now.”
She ended the call.
She’d assumed Iris‘ pup being sick was just another angle, another way to manipulate Julian. But apparently, the little one really was in bad shape,
Dinner time.
Julian had given instructions before heading downstairs–the kitchen prepared light, easy food for Lillian. Oatmeal too.
telen brought it up.
ifter Inkwood Gardens burned down, Julian had transferred Helen directly to work at Laurel Manor.
illian took a spoonful of the oatmeal and asked casually, “Where is he?”
t was rare for him not to be hovering.
felen hesitated at the question, then said, “Alpha Julian isn’t feeling well.”
Jillian’s eyebrow went up. She looked at Helen.
Helen added, “Dr. Blackwood’s already here.”
Richard Blackwood, the Graves Pack doctor.
But honestly, with Julian’s Alpha constitution, even if the whole pack took turns calling Richard out, he probably wouldn’t get… sick? She’d known him for years and never once seen him ill.
“What happened?”
The question came out before she could stop it.
Helen’s expression flickered. She glanced at Lillian like she wasn’t sure how much to say.

Lillian’s brow lifted higher. “Well?”
Helen said, “Not totally sure. Alpha Julian came downstairs earlier and… he kept throwing up.”
“Dr. Blackwood got here fast. He’s got him on an IV now.”
Lillian blinked,
Throwing up after going downstairs?
On an IV…?

Julian on an IV. That was a first.
But why was he sick? Her mind jumped back to that bowl of soup in the bedroom–the one she’d refused to touch, the one he’d downed himself.
Was it the soup?
Yesterday, a bowl of soup landed her in the hospital. Today, that same soup landed him on an IV.
Hah. Either his kitchen staff had no idea what they were doing, or the Graves Pack hated her so much now they’d go this far.
Lillian glanced at the oatmeal in front of her. Set her spoon down.
‘Who made the soup this afternoon?”
Helen said, “The new nutritionist. Greta Taylor.”
Lillian asked, “And tonight’s meal?”
Helen said, “Greta made that too.”
Lillian went quiet.
Her again.
Yesterday at Inkwood Gardens, the nutritionist Julian had hired for her turned out to be someone Catherine sent–all the way from the sanatorium.
Lillian set the spoon down in the bowl.
“He hasn’t eaten yet, has he?”
Helen shook her head. “Alpha Julian hasn’t had anything.”
Lillian was quiet for another moment.
Perfect timing then.
She pulled a robe on over her sleep clothes, stood up, and picked up the bowl of oatmeal.
Helen blinked. “Luna, what are you-

“Can’t have the Omega eating before the Alpha’s had his meal, right?”
Lillian’s lips curved into a faint smile.
But whatever amusement flickered in her eyes, Helen didn’t see warmth in it. Nothing gentle. Nothing considerate.
Before Helen could respond, Lillian walked out of the room, bowl in hand.
Julian’s bedroom was right next to hers.

She’d been so exhausted this afternoon, she’d slept straight through whatever commotion Richard’s arrival had caused.
The door was cracked open.
Julian was lying on the bed, weak. When he saw Lillian in the doorway, his expression shifted.
“What are you doing up?”
His voice was soft. That same doting tone he’d always used with her.
From the moment they’d met until now, he’d always spoken to her like that.
That kind of tone–anyone could fall into it.
But living with him had taught her something. Gentleness wasn’t enough. Pampering words meant nothing if a man couldn’t give a woman real protection.
If he couldn’t do that…
Then he wasn’t really a good man. Not in any way that counted.
