Julian stepped out of his sedan, scooped Lillian up without a word, and practically shoved her into the back seat of his car.
As his vehicle passed George’s-

The drive back to Laurel Manor was spent in total silence.
Once inside, Lillian sank into one of the living room couches. Julian went straight to the cabinet, pulled out a bottle of whiskey, and cracked it open.
He knocked back two glasses before pouring a third and dropping onto the couch opposite Lillian.
The moment he crossed his legs, his stare was pure ice.
“Start talking, Where’s the pup?”
He cut straight to the chase.
It was phrased as a question, but his tone made it clear he already believed Lillian was responsible
Lillian met his gaze, a mocking smile touching her lips. “You’re asking me?”
“Lillian, that pup isn’t even four weeks old.”

Now it was directed at her.
A cold, bitter smile touched Lillian’s lips. “You never really trusted me, did you?”
Julian said nothing.
Lillian went on, “Back when you were pursuing me, you believed everything I told you. But ever since we became a pair-”
She broke off, shrugged, and shook her head lightly.
“Ever since then, anytime something involved your pack, you stopped trusting me.”
