If she had to guess, it probably was him. He’d been resisting breaking the mate bond all this time, after all.
Edmund’s voice was firm on the line. “Find out who did it. No one touches our pack and walks away.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
The call ended.
A moment later, the phone in Lillian’s room buzzed. Julian’s name flashed on the screen.
He didn’t waste time. “Since the first dissolution agreement fell through,” Julian said, his tone almost conversational, “maybe we should just accept the bond. Seems like the Moon Goddess has her own plans.”
Hearing him invoke the Moon Goddess‘ will, a slow, vicious smile spread across Lillian’s lips.
“You’re absolutely right,” she replied, her voice smooth. “It must be the Moon Goddess‘
How could anyone from the Graves Pack deserve to keep breathing?
Her mother, watching from the heavens, wouldn’t let her just walk away–not until every last one of them was torn apart.
How could she possibly leave them untouched?
Her calm agreement caught Julian completely off guard.
He’d expected this call to set her off–to make her scream, curse, or unleash the temper she’d shown so clearly lately. He was prepared for fury.
He hadn’t expected this… quiet acceptance.
There was even a soft, almost gentle laugh in her voice.
A gentle laugh?

Did she really feel anything gentle toward him now?

For a second, Julian wondered if he was hearing things–if maybe he was imagining the way she used to speak to him, back when things were sweet between them. She always had a smile in her voice then.
But now…
When Julian stayed silent, Lillian spoke again. “You don’t want to break the bond? Fine. Let’s keep it.”
Her tone was still light, still almost smiling.
This time, he heard it clearly. But why did that gentle sound feel so dangerous?
Before Julian could form a response, the line went dead.
Listening to the dial tone, Julian frowned deeply.
Thomas entered the room. “Alpha, the flight to the Western Continent is ready. We can leave for the airport now.”
“Cancel it.”
Thomas blinked. “Alpha?”
Cancel? They needed to meet with Langley Group, figure out what was going on–wasn’t t the plan?
Cancel, now?
Julian closed his eyes briefly. “Yes. Cancel it.”
All he could think about was the unsettling calm in Lillian’s voice.
It was too gentle.
And Julian knew damn well that gentleness didn’t mean she’d suddenly decided to play happy family with him.
He had no idea what she was planning next, but something felt deeply wrong.
That soft laugh had sent a chill down his spine.
Thomas gave a slow nod. “Understood.”

“Any news from the authorities?”
If the evidence was solid, they should have picked her up by now.
And yet, he’d just reached her on the phone.
Thomas shook his head. “Nothing yet.”

After a pause, he added, “Probably insufficient evidence. Otherwise, they would’ve moved already.”
Julian let out a cold laugh. “Insufficient evidence? Or is Finn pulling strings for her?”
Thomas didn’t answer.
Finn helping Lillian was entirely possible–he’d been supporting her from the start.
Rubbing his temples, Julian tried to shake the sound of Lillian’s voice from his mind.
She’d been desperate to sever the bond before. Now she was suddenly agreeing to keep it?
No. This wasn’t right.
She wouldn’t give up that easily. Something else was going on.
Recalling her recent moves, Julian looked at Thomas. “Increase security around Iris and the pup. Especially the pup.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
The pup was Julian’s biggest concern when it came to Lillian now.
Even if some part of him whispered that the girl’s death wasn’t Lillian’s doing…
Now that Lillian had agreed to stay bonded, every instinct told him to protect the child from
her.

At Starfall Mountain, Lillian finally returned Edmund’s call.
“Lily,” he greeted.
“Edmund.”
