It was clear she had to escalate things with Hilda and Finn. If she didn’t manage to break them up for good–especially with the way Lillian was behaving–who knew how long Lillian would keep leveraging Finn’s status to throw her weight around within the Graves Pack.
Seeing Julian remain silent, Eleanor’s frustration boiled over. “Julian!”
Lillian’s tone was unnervingly calm. “Did I hit you?”
Eleanor simply glared back, her eyes full of venom. In that moment, she looked as though she wanted nothing more than to rip Lillian apart.
Lillian raised a brow. “I didn’t lay a finger on your
Eleanor said nothing, her jaw tight.
Hilda cut in, anger sharp in her voice. “You didn’t, but your people did. What’s the difference?”
Hilda was seething. This damn Lillian–on one hand, she acted as though she were still part of the Graves Pack, forcing her way back into the house. On the other, she showed absolutely no respect for the pack’s elders. So what exactly did she think she was in this pack?
Lillian replied evenly, “They were simply following the rules your mother laid down. Nothing wrong with that, is there?”
Hilda opened her mouth to retort, but Lillian continued, her words deceptively light yet each one landing with force.
“Even the highest–ranking among us answer to the same laws as everyone else. You’re not going to tell me you set the rules but don’t intend to follow them yourself, are you?” She paused, letting the question hang. “So what kind of rules are the Graves Pack rules, really?”
Eleanor felt a wave of dizziness. This damn bitch–when had she become so sharp–tongued? Was there just no getting past that mouth of hers?
“Julian!” she shouted, turning her fury on him since she couldn’t win against Lillian.
Julian took a slow drag from his cigarette, his gaze settling on Lillian. “Go back to your room.”
Eleanor stared at him in disbelief. “What did you just say?”
She had called him here to kick Lillian out of the house–there was still so much to settle.

And yet here he was, telling Lillian to go back to her room? How was that not protecting her?
Eleanor’s chest gre
tighter. “After all those properties were destroyed–we haven’t even dealt with that–and you’re telling her to go to her room?” Her voice rose. “What room? She needs to get the hell out of here today!”
Julian’s response was flat, almost dismissive. “So she burned down a few houses. What’s the big deal?”
Eleanor, Hilda, and Iris all turned to stare at him simultaneously, none able to believe what they had just heard.
Especially Eleanor. She watched him, barely able to draw breath. “What did you say? What’s the big deal?”
“Weren’t those the ones I gave her in the first place?”
His words left them speechless.
But Eleanor quickly gathered herself. “Not all of them were from you!”
“How much did you lose? I’ll pay you back.”
Eleanor could only stare, rendered silent once more.
By then, Julian had completely run out of patience. Things at the company were growing messier by the day, and now all this drama at home was grating on his nerves. He just wanted the confrontation over.
Eleanor looked at him, her voice trembling with anger. “You’ll pay her back? That’s still Graves Pack money. Isn’t your money the pack’s money, too?”
Lillian picked up the fruit plate in front of her and speared a piece of apple with a fork. The
risp, loud crunch seemed to tighten the air in the room.
Iris flinched inwardly. She hadn’t eaten anything all day. Leftover food from Lillian’s meal still sat on the table–a fresh salad, roasted meat–all of it looking incredibly appetizing. She normally wouldn’t crave such things, but hunger had a way of making everything look delicious. Right now, Iris really wanted to eat.
Seeing Lillian calmly enjoying her snack, Eleanor felt like her insides were on fire.
“Julian,” she said tightly, “you think this is just about the houses? Look at her. She moved back
in today and stirred up so much trouble that none of us have eaten a thing.”
Lillian set her fork down. “You not being hungry isn’t my fault.”

Eleanor, Iris, and Hilda exchanged glances, too exasperated to respond. Was she really suggesting they just weren’t hungry? They were starving, and she knew it.
“She needs to get the hell out of here. Right now Eleanor didn’t even want to argue anymore. She just wanted Lillian gone.
