Chapter 36 Family’s Shield in Crisis

ThirdPerson POV:

Lillian’s brow furrowed.

Margaret’s voice came through the line. Accept the friend request. I’ll send you the video.

Then she hung up.

A moment later, a friend request appeared on Lillian’s phone. Her brows were still drawn tight, but she accepted it anyway.

Almost immediately, a video came through. Lillian tapped it openand the images that hit her were brutal.

You took her in, but you never bothered to teach her anything. Now this person you raised has gone and caused trouble outside. You’re responsible for this, aren’t you?

In the video, a woman was tied to a chair, soaked in blood.

Lillian’s head spun.

Her chest seized up. She couldn’t breathe.

Then the video showed flames consuming the place. The place being burned was the orphanage where she’d grown up.

Before she could react, the video was already unsent.

No wonder Iris was so quick with recalling messages. Margaret had clearly taught her well.

Right then, Margaret called again.

So. How’d you like that warning?

The arrogance in her voice, the barely concealed threatit made Lillian’s grip on the phone tighten.

Margaret went on. Iris is my only daughter. My one and only. Coming for her like that? You’re going to pay for it.

Lillian drew a slow breath. And what exactly do you expect from me after a stunt like that?

The air between them, even through the phone, felt charged. Tense. Ready to snap.

Margaret let out a dismissive snort. If you hurry, you might still be able to save your dear orphanage director

She paused, letting it land.

But Lillian, you’d better figure out what you’re going to say within the hour. Make a public statement. Shut this whole thing down. The Iris thing. Otherwise

Otherwise what? Margaret didn’t finish.

She didn’t need to. The warning in her voice carried everything.

Margaret ended the call.

Lillian was already on her feet, heading for the door. Chloe was right behind her.

George came downstairs and saw her moving. He caught up quickly. Miss, you’re going out?

The orphanage. Something happened. I have to go.

Her voice was tight, strained. She hadn’t seen this comingMargaret going after the orphanage directly.

Lillian rushed to BlueDove Orphanage.

The whole way there, her heart was in her throat. Chloe wanted to find the right words to comfort her, but nothing came.

Lillian’s POV:

We were getting close when my phone rang.

My brother, Edmund Langley. I picked up. Edmund.

BlueDove. It’s handled.

I went still. What?

Yeah. I was in a meeting, couldn’t call sooner. Did you already hear?

I didn’t answer right away. The knot that had been lodged in my chest suddenly dissolved.

In that moment, I really understood what it meant to have family who could protect you completely.

Even Julian had never given me that kind of absolute safety.

Edmund asked, Were you scared?

My voice came out rough. Yeah.

When I’d seen that video earlier, I was genuinely terrified.

I’d been thinking, if anything happened to the director, I’d tear Margaret apart myself. Piece by piece.

Lillian. Have George take Blythe’s number off his block list.

Blythe? Who’s that?

The one who works with him.

Edmund explained, Blythe’s in Gilneas City right now. George handles things directly with youBlythe’s job is keeping tabs on the others.

He paused. Those two have never gotten along.”

The scare earlier? It happened because George had missed Blythe’s call.

I sniffed. Okay. Got it.

I hung up.

I leaned forward and said to George, Edmund said take Blythe’s number off your block list.

George’s expression went stiff.

He really didn’t like that woman.

Are we still going to the orphanage?

Might as well,I said. We’re almost there anyway.
