Chapter 38 Left Behind Again

Chapter 38 Left Behind Again

ThirdPerson POV:

Julian didn’t believe her. Not for a second. He figured she was just putting on a show to get under his skin.

Alright. Enough with the attitude. I know you’ve been upset lately. From now on, I won’t see Iris again.

He shifted into coaxing mode, helpless now, trying to smooth things over.

What he didn’t realize was that the woman in front of him wasn’t someone he could sweettalk back into line anymore.

That moment back at the estatewhen Iris had shoved her to the ground, when she’d clutched his pant leg and told him her stomach hurtthat had been her last chance for him.

For six months, Iris had always come first in his eyes.

If just onceone single timehe’d put her first, maybe everything between them could’ve been fixed.

But instead, he’d carried Iris away.

Lillian turned her head to the side, saying nothing.

Seeing her like that made something ache behind Julian’s eyes. You don’t need to wave that bond dissolution in my face just to get a reaction out of me. Alright?

Lillian still didn’t answer.

Julian pinched the bridge of his nose, frustration building. When did you and Finn start crossing paths?

Finn.

He was sure of it now. That Draenei who’d been shadowing LillianFinn had sent him.

Lillian let out a cold, hollow laugh. Did Iris not only blind you, but mess with your head too?

Her and Finn? That silent, closedoff man who kept even shewolves at arm’s length? What possible connection could she have with him?

Julian’s face went darker.

Lillian kept laughing, the sound sharp and mocking. Won’t see Iris anymore. Right.

Hearing him promise that was almost funny.

Because it was a promise he could never keep.

Julian couldn’t stand the way she was looking at him nowlike she didn’t trust a single word out of his mouth. He reached for her. meaning to pull her close.

It always worked before. Whenever she got upset and pulled away, all he had to do was hold her, say the right things, and she’d

come back.

But this time, Lillian didn’t soften into his arms.

She stayed rigid, her eyes icecold as she stared back at him.

Julian felt his temper spike.

He forced it down, kept his voice level. For the past six months, I just wanted my brother’s pup to be born safely. I know you’re angry, but-

His phone buzzed, cutting him off.

Eleanor’s name lit up the screen.

No need to guess. It was about Iris again.

Jaw tight, Julian declined the call.

A second later, it rang again. Clearly, they weren’t going to stop until he answered.

The smile on Lillian’s lips turned even more cutting. Answer it. She’s probably on the hospital roof right now, threatening to jump unless she sees Ethan.

Only a face identical to Ethan’s can talk her down.

Depression was such a convenient excuse.

Not only did it make everyone believe her, it bought their sympathy too. Every time the pack got nervous that her stunts might hurt the pup, they’d call Julian. Immediately.

Julian exhaled slowly, frustration bleeding through. He reached out and ruffled her hair, a gesture meant to soothe.

Then he answered the call. What.

Julian, you need to get here now! Iris is on the hospital rooftopshe’s going to jump!Eleanor’s voice came through panicked, high and urgent.

The mockery on Lillian’s face deepened.

See? These days, when it came to Iris, she could predict exactly what was happening.

This Iris

Whenever Julian was with Lillian, Iris always found a reason to pull him away. Right on time.

Julian’s expression turned grim.

Before he could respond, Eleanor’s voice kept pleading through the phone. I know you said you’d stop after the pup was born.

But the baby’s here now, and if she actually dies, how are you going to live with yourself? How will you face Ethan’s memory?

Julian went quiet.

His face darkened even further.

This IrisShe really knew how to drag a scene out forever.

He ended the call.

Julian looked at Lillian. She opened the car door and pulled an umbrella from the back seat.

She stepped out into the rain and popped it open.

Julian didn’t drive off right away. He reached for her. Let me take you home first.
