Julian didn’t believe her. Not for a second. He figured she was just putting on a show to get under his skin.

“Alright. Enough with the attitude. I know you’ve been upset lately. From now on, I won’t see Iris again.”

He shifted into coaxing mode, helpless now, trying to smooth things over.

What he didn’t realize was that the woman in front of him wasn’t someone he could sweet–talk back into line anymore.

Julian’s face went darker.

Lillian kept laughing, the sound sharp and mocking. “Won’t see Iris anymore. Right.”

Hearing him promise that was almost funny.

Because it was a promise he could never keep.

Julian couldn’t stand the way she was looking at him now–like she didn’t trust a single word out of his mouth. He reached for her. meaning to pull her close.

She stayed rigid, her eyes ice–cold as she stared back at him.

Julian felt his temper spike.

He forced it down, kept his voice level. “For the past six months, I just wanted my brother’s pup to be born safely. I know you’re angry, but-”

Depression was such a convenient excuse.

Not only did it make everyone believe her, it bought their sympathy too. Every time the pack got nervous that her stunts might hurt the pup, they’d call Julian. Immediately.

Julian exhaled slowly, frustration bleeding through. He reached out and ruffled her hair, a gesture meant to soothe.

Then he answered the call. “What.”

“Julian, you need to get here now! Iris is on the hospital rooftop–she’s going to jump!” Eleanor’s voice came through panicked, high and urgent.

The mockery on Lillian’s face deepened.

See? These days, when it came to Iris, she could predict exactly what was happening.

Julian’s expression turned grim.

Before he could respond, Eleanor’s voice kept pleading through the phone. “I know you said you’d stop after the pup was born.

“But the baby’s here now, and if she actually dies, how are you going to live with yourself? How will you face Ethan’s memory?”
