Lillian laughed even more wildly. “Margaret, you must be joking. In your eyes, I’m not even worth a stray dog. How could I possibly do anything to you?”
Margaret said. “You…”
Lillian asked. “How big is the loss?”
Over the phone, Margaret replied, “It really was you?”
At that moment, Margaret’s teeth were almost grinding together.
Lillian–who had just denied any involvement–was now laying her cards on the table?
Lillian said, “Even someone as worthless as a stray dog like me can cause a little trouble. I’m sure you’ll be able to clean it up soon.”
By bringing up Margaret’s earlier words again and again, Lillian was throwing Margaret’s own insult right back at her–the ultimate mockery.
While Margaret was still seething with rage, Lillian hung up the phone.
Handle it?
No, Margaret wouldn’t be able to handle it this time. This was only the beginning. The overwhelming counterattack was still to come.
Lillian casually tossed her phone into her bag.
She turned to look at Julian, who was watching her and asked, “What did you do now?”
His tone gave nothing away, but the look in his eyes held a chill she had never seen before.
Meeting his icy gaze, Lillian shrugged. “What could I possibly do? I just took back a little of what was owed to me after what happened this morning.
“After all, I suffered such a huge loss at Inkwood Gardens. I didn’t want to settle for just an apology from her.”
She emphasized the word “apology” heavily, lacing it with sarcasm.

Julian had promised her an explanation in the hospital room, but all he’d gotten from the other party was an apology.
The so–called “explanation” was laughable when you thought about it.
Lillian raised an eyebrow. “Even if my life is worthless, half of it is worth more than a cheap apology.”
Hearing the growing sarcasm in her voice, Julian’s breath hitched completely.
Lillian stepped toward the door.
The air around Julian turned freezing cold.
As she passed by him, he grabbed her wrist. “So, you’re not satisfied with the explanation I gave you?”
“Your explanation was fine. It’s just a shame I’m someone who doesn’t know how to appreciate it.”
With that, Lillian tried to shake off Julian’s grip.
But his hold only tightened–he had no intention of letting go.
Lillian lowered her gaze. “Let go.”
“Where are you going now?” Julian asked through gritted teeth.
The last time she’d run off from the hospital, even Thomas hadn’t been able to track her down.
This time, Julian wouldn’t let her disappear from his sight.
Lillian said, “To where I belong. And you should let go of the hand you’re holding.”
Hearing her tell him to let go, he finally lost control. He turned and pulled her into an embrace from behind.
Lillian’s breath caught.
Just as she was about to struggle, Julian tightened his arms around her. “Did Finn help you with
this?”
Lillian sighed inwardly.
Finn… That name had come up way too often between them lately.

Lillian closed her eyes. “I said, let go.”
She didn’t explain–she wouldn’t lower herself to explain.
More importantly, Julian no longer deserved an explanation from her.

Julian’s breathing quickened. “Didn’t I say it before? If you want to tear the sky down, tell me- I’ll tear it down for you. Don’t go to him for help.”
“When I lost half my life, all you got from them was an apology. What sky could you possibly tear down for me?”
Every word was sharp, laced with scorn.
Her mockery was like the swipe of a wolf’s claw–cutting and contemptuous.
Julian’s breath grew strained. “It’s not as simple as you think. Actually, I…”
Before Julian could bring up the matter of Simon, Lillian cut him off.
“I wanted half of their lives as payback. Not only did you not give me that, you gave them the chance to take half of mine instead.
“What sky could you possibly tear down for me?”
Lillian’s words were truly biting.
She continued, “But now, Margaret is wishing she were dead.”
With that, Lillian forcefully pried Julian’s arms from around her.
Hearing Lillian say “wishing she were dead” left Julian even more breathless.
Was Margaret really suffering that much now?
And who had done it…? Had Finn helped her?
Lillian left.
Julian stood where he was, his expression dark and terrifying as he watched Lillian walk out of the hospital room.
