Tyrone straightened the collar of his shirt and spoke at an unhurried pace. “Our condolences to all of your families.”
Then he turned and walked directly through the doors of the police station.
Noel glanced back over his shoulder. “Mr. Winter, is it alright to leave Ms. Reid alone in the car?”
Tyrone didn’t break his stride. “She’s going to be the future lady of the Winter family. A scene like this is nothing she can’t handle.”
Aella had her wild moments, but she was sharp. Young as she was, she had backbone. A war of words was never going to get the better of her.
After Tyrone went inside, Natasha was helped out of another car by her attendants. She said something, and the Hills’ butler stepped forward and knocked on the car window.
Aella lowered it, saw it was Natasha, and got out.
She had no particular warmth toward the Hills. But the Hills were one of Vleka’s most powerful families, and Natasha was an elder.
Beyond that, she still didn’t know whether the deaths of the three women were going to bring serious trouble down on Tyrone, so she thought it was better to be polite.
Natasha looked at her directly. “Ms. Reid, is what Mr. Frost described truly what happened?”
Aella glanced at the doors of the police station, then looked around at the representatives of the three families.
She let her expression cool and spoke one word at a time. “Mrs. Natasha, we weren’t able to bring them back, but we did everything we could. We don’t need your gratitude for that. But I do ask that you know when to stop and leave Tyrone alone.”
She could be polite. But on the matter of these three deaths, she was not going to retreat or leave herself open to attack.
Natasha’s eyes carried a thin edge of hostility. “Ms. Reid, because of Mr. Winter, you and my granddaughter Zera have been at odds for a long time. Mr. Winter has also seen fit to deal with Zera on multiple occasions, all on your account. I have every reason to suspect that my granddaughter’s death was an act of personal revenge carried out with intent.”

Aella’s expression didn’t soften. Her voice left no opening. “I trust that the law is fair and impartial, and it will give Tyrone the clear verdict he deserves. If Natasha has doubts, please take them to the police.”
Natasha was testing her, banking on her youth. Aella could see it perfectly clearly.
The three Hill siblings exchanged a look.
Daniel spoke first. “Please don’t take offense, Ms. Reid. The Hills have always trusted Mr. Winter’s character.”
well Aella held her ground without shifting an inch. “Daniel, I trust that the Hills know very what kind of person your sister Zera was. Those who do enough evil destroy themselves. The three of them brought this ending on themselves, and there is no one else to blame.”
She looked around at the assembled families. “Without evidence, an accusation is nothing but slander. If anyone dares to throw mud at Tyrone again, I will make sure my future in-laws bury them.”
She dropped that where it was and turned her back on all of them.
The Winter family driver stepped forward respectfully and opened the car door. Aella got in without looking back.
Natasha’s expression soured. “Mouthing off like that at her age. Absolutely no sense of propriety.”
Hazel stepped up beside her. “Natasha, Zera was your granddaughter, but everyone in this circle knows what Zera and her mother were. Those three women were rotten to the core and never did anything decent together.”
Hazel added with open contempt, “That Jenny, good riddance. At least she can’t drag my Zach into anything else.”
Neither the Townsends nor the Hills showed a trace of grief over the deaths of Jenny, Zera, or Anna. Only George stood apart, hollowed out with sorrow for the child that would never be born.
Lilian turned to him. “Mr. Cunningham, a bad wife can poison a whole family line. Given what those Caldwell women were made of, who’s to say the child was even yours. What’s done is done. Try to look forward.”
That one sentence cut through everything George was feeling and landed somewhere quiet.
He exhaled slowly, again and again. “Mrs. Lilian is right. What’s done is done. We all move

forward.”
Michael looked at Daniel. “Daniel, Grandma is tired. Take her home.”
Daniel helped Natasha into the car and they left. The remaining families talked quietly among themselves for a moment, then walked into the police station together.
