Tyrone gave Aella’s cheek a gentle pinch as he looked down at her. “Good girl.”
Aella brushed his hand away and continued, her tone steady. “What happened to Zera and her mother… they brought it on themselves. I don’t feel guilty. I don’t feel sorry for them either.”
She paused, then added more quietly, “The only thing I care about is whether those three deaths will cause trouble for you.”
Their eyes met.
Tyrone pulled her into his arms before he could stop himself.
She hadn’t blamed him.
Hadn’t pressed him with questions or dug for answers.
She had simply chosen his side without hesitation, her only concern being whether he might face any fallout from what had happened.
His arms tightened around her, holding her closer, then closer still.
“Aella,” he murmured, his voice low against her hair, “it’s all over.”
From this day forward, she would be his only choice as well, unwavering and absolute.
That evening, at the Winter Estate.
The grand dining table groaned under a lavish spread, yet only Tyrone’s parents and his grandfather sat around it.
Ralph set down his fork with an indignant huff. “Here we were, worrying ourselves sick over them day and night. And after everything that happened, do they come straight home? No. they run off to her mother’s house again!”
His voice climbed with each word. “And while we’re at it, we need to have a word with Raine too. She’s out camping with Brad at her age. Have you taught her nothing about boundaries between boys and girls?”
Virginia listened in silence until he finished. Only then did she speak, calm and measured.
“Your son having a mother-in-law to dote on him,” she said coolly, “is a far better thing than him coming home to your perpetually miserable face.”

Ralph frowned, considering it. “I mean… sure, but he can’t be running over there all the time. Look at this feast! It’s all going to waste.”
Virginia cut him off without raising her voice. “Brad grew up with our kids. Raine’s closer to him than she is to you.
“Frankly, I trust him with her more than I trust you. So you can stop talking now.”
Ralph, thoroughly dismantled by his wife in just a few sentences, turned helplessly toward the head of the table.
Edwin picked up his utensils and said simply, “Let’s eat.”
The old man had already transferred his shares to his grandson.
His son had walked away with nothing after the divorce. Every last asset had gone to Virginia and the children. The man’s standing in this household ranked somewhere below the family dog.
If Edwin so much as raised his voice, his daughter-in-law would slam her hand on the table and make her displeasure known. Ralph would end up trailing after her, spending the night trying to smooth things over.
At his age, Edwin had learned restraint. Better to say less, see less, and wait for the day he could hold a great-grandchild in his arms.
Ralph watched his father and wife eat in silence, the words building in his throat until he could no longer hold them back.
“Virginia,” he said, lowering his voice but not enough, “Tyrone took that girl out to international waters, and three people ended up dead. I don’t care that the Hills, the
Cunninghams, and the Townsends haven’t come after him. I don’t care that the police have closed the case. He knows what he did.”
“Ralph Winter!”
Virginia shot to her feet, and Ralph, conditioned by years of experience, rose right along with
her.
She struck his face, the slap swift and precise.
Edwin cleared his throat, about to intervene, but the warning in Virginia’s eyes stopped him cold. He averted his gaze and continued cutting his steak instead.
The slap hadn’t been hard, but the humiliation burned. Ralph stiffened. “Why are you hitting

Virginia pointed at him, her voice cutting like glass. “You call yourself his father? And you’re the one smearing his name?”
Ralph’s voice shrank to half its size. “I’m just saying it here, at home. He’s my son, of course I’m on his side.”
Virginia glanced toward the staff outside, then turned back to him, her tone dropping into something far more dangerous. “Our son has nothing to hide. You don’t get to say a single word against him. Not one.”
Ralph turned back to Edwin one last time. “Dad, will you please say something?”
Edwin hesitated, then ventured, “Perhaps we could ask Tyrone and Aella to move back here. Let them stay until the wedding. Once they’re married and have a child, we can help raise the baby. After that, they can move out again and live on their own.”
Ralph jumped at the idea. “That’s perfect.”
Virginia shot her husband a look and lowered herself slowly back into her chair. “That’s assuming Tyrone and Aella even agree to it.”
Ralph was already reaching for his phone. “I’ll call Tyrone myself and tell him.”

noticed. “Who was that? Why didn’t you answer?”
Tyrone placed a piece of broccoli onto her plate. “Telemarketer. Or a scam call. Not worth it.”
She nodded and returned the gesture by serving him a spare rib.
Across the table, Warren and Miriam exchanged a glance, quiet satisfaction softening their expressions as they watched the two take care of each other in small, effortless ways.
Warren sighed. “If Zera and her mother hadn’t been so greedy, they wouldn’t have ended up
like this.”
Miriam felt no pity whatsoever. “They had a perfectly good life, but all they wanted was to
