Chapter 118

Liam’s back ached.

He lay perfectly still, trying to make himself invisible.

The police had come earlier, but he’d been too scared to say anything. I’m such a coward,he thought. If he kept this up, how would he ever get back to his mom?

Suddenly, the light flicked on.

Eliana strode over and ripped the covers off the bed, her face contorted with rage as she glared down at Liam. You little brat. You think you can sleep? Get up. If I’m miserable, you’re going to be miserable too.

It’s all because of that bitch, Stella, she seethed. Why doesn’t she just die? If she dies, I’ll send you to join her.

She raised her hand to strike him, but a flash of headlights cut through the darkness outside.

She froze. Is that Dylan?

She rushed to the window. It was his car.

He was back.

Eliana looked at the trembling boy and suppressed her anger.

She pulled the covers back over him, switched off the light, and went downstairs.

When Liam heard the door click shut, he stopped shaking. He knew he was safe for now.

His lower lip quivered, and tears began to stream down his face.

Huddled under the blankets, he whispered, Mom, I’ll find a way to get to you. I promise.

He’d thought of countless plans, but none of them seemed possible.

He had evidence on his phone, but would the police believe a little kid?

What if they didn’t? Things would only get worse.

Mommy, I miss you so much,” he sobbed quietly.

Downstairs, Eliana opened the door to find Dylan.

Dylan, you’re back,” she said, immediately trying to throw Stella under the bus. Stella called the cops and had your mother

arrested.

She didn’t even bother to ask how he was.

Dylan’s gaze was icy. He thought of the medical records Rowan had shown him. A chill went through him. While he didn’t want to believe it, the seed of doubt had been planted.

Did Eliana really run off with another man all those years ago?

Rowan wouldn’t joke about something like that.

He looked at her, his eyes boring into hers. Stella did nothing wrong. My mother slandered her online. She’s an adult, and adults have to face the consequences of their actions.

With that, Dylan walked past her into the house.

Eliana burned with jealousy at how he defended Stella, but she knew better than to press the issue.

She shot a glare at Miles, who followed Dylan inside. Why did he have to investigate me?

Miles blinked. Why is she glaring at me? Does she think I’m in the way?

He took one look at Eliana’s face, turned on his heel, and walked right back out.

Eliana stomped her foot in frustration. That was a look of pure disgust.

I have to find a way to convince them Stella forged those records.

Dylan headed straight upstairs to check on his son.

Watching him go, Eliana felt a wave of relief that she hadn’t hit the little brat.

She went to the kitchen to get Dylan a glass of water, figuring it was best to let father and son have some time together. For the child’s sake, Dylan wouldn’t do anything to her.
