That afternoon, Serena took her little Liam out for a walk. She quietly had six bodyguards tag along, making sure no one noticed.
Now that Liam was with her, everything felt a lot less safe. She had to keep her son protected, no matter what. As long as he was safe, she didn’t care how much hassle it was.
she took Liam to a fried chicken place on the busy street. This place had the best fried chicken legs she’d ever tasted. A few days before her period, she always craved something spicy or fried, and she’d stumbled upon this spot by chance. The ngredients were top–notch.
Serena led Liam inside and told him, “Sweetie, this fried chicken place is my absolute favorite. The food here is amazing.”
Liam grinned. “Mom, if you say it’s good, then it must be!”
He couldn’t help but swallow hard, his mouth watering. He was dying to dig in.
Outside, Dylan was on his way to meet a client when he suddenly spotted Stella walking in with Liam, heading straight for he fried chicken place.
Seeing Stella was okay, Dylan finally felt at ease. Liam was right next to her, beaming with happiness.
Liam never smiled like that when he was with me,‘ Dylan thought bitterly.
Miles caught sight of Stella too.
Dylan turned to Miles and asked, “Back then, when you needed 30 grand, why didn’t you just come to me?”
Miles smiled. “Mr. Ashford, you were in a tough spot yourself back then. I couldn’t bring myself to bother you. Ms. Hale noticed I was struggling and gave me the money right away.
After I got back to work, I tried to pay her back, but she wouldn’t take it. She said it was for my mom’s supplements and wouldn’t let me return it.”
Dylan frowned. “Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
Honestly, Miles didn’t feel like talking to him anymore.
But after thinking it over, he said, “Mr. Ashford, back then you were completely wrapped up in Ms. Lambert. Even if I’d told you, you wouldn’t have remembered. You never remembered anything that didn’t matter to you.
“And you hardly ever came home. Ms. Hale always brought your lunch to the office. I had no idea those simple–looking meals were actually health–promoting cuisine.”
Dylan’s heart twisted painfully. Just thinking about how he’d let Stella down all these years made him feel like he couldn’t breathe. The pain was so overwhelming.
It wasn’t until he saw the smile on Stella’s face that he realized she had been sacrificing for him all along.
Now, he was filled with regret and frustration. He couldn’t help but wonder why he’d never seen Eliana for who she really
was.
Even if he didn’t want to believe it, the truth was right in front of him. Eliana had left back then because of what happened to him. And she even had a daughter with another man.

He couldn’t even let himself go there.
Dylan suddenly turned to Miles. “Come on, let’s go find Dr. Hazel.”

Miles replied, “Mr. Ashford, Dr. Morgan left for overseas training. Before she left, she called me and told me to remind you to look after yourself.”
Dylan frowned. “When did she leave?”
“This morning. Didn’t I tell you earlier?” Miles asked, looking worried. “Mr. Ashford, are you feeling unwell again? If you are, we should go to the hospital right now.”
Dylan wasn’t feeling sick. He used to hold on just for Eliana and their child.
But now, with all his dreams in pieces, he couldn’t even find a reason to keep going.
Half a year had gone by in the blink of an eye.
Dylan glanced at Stella again. She was goofing around with Liam, making him giggle nonstop. He could tell how Stella doted on Liam. She’d totally nail being a mom.
Suddenly, Dylan felt all his drive just drain away. Every obsession and every stubborn thought was gone. ‘Is this what it feels like to be at the end of the line?‘ he wondered.
Dylan had his head down, lost in his own thoughts. When he finally looked up, he saw Spencer Grant sitting right across from Stella. He’d just shown up, bringing a present for Liam.
Liam’s smile was so bright, and he even hopped up to thank Spencer.
But as Dylan watched all this, he couldn’t help but think, ‘Why does it hurt so much to see this?‘
