The doctor frowned, her tone growing sharper. “Are you really this child’s mother? How could you consider an IV for someone so young? His fever is caused by indigestion.”

“Doctor, please watch your tone.” Beatrice, dressed elegantly with an air of authority, cut in, her gaze holding a clear warning “We may have been careless, but this is my daughter–in–law. I suggest you speak with more respect.”

The doctor had seen all types. Her duty was to care for the child, but if the family refused to listen, she wouldn’t push. Judging by their appearance–clearly wealthy and privileged–she had no desire to stir up trouble.

“I’ll prescribe some medicine. Also,” the doctor added, “the child has bruises on his back. If discipline is necessary, please be gentler.” With that, she stood and went to find a nurse.

A flicker of panic crossed Eliana’s eyes. She found Liam’s constant crying annoying, so she hit him a few times.

Beatrice’s expression tightened with concern. “Eliana, what’s going on? How are you looking after him? He is my grandson,

after all.”

Eliana quickly put on a wounded look. “Mrs. Ashford, please don’t listen to that doctor. How could I ever hurt my own child? He must have fallen when I wasn’t looking.”

Eliana had been careful to strike Liam only where the bruises wouldn’t show, hidden under clothes. But she didn’t expect that the doctor had noticed the bruises after all.

“What’s going on?” Dylan strode over, his heart aching at the sight of his son lying weak and listless in Eliana’s arms. Even hearing his father’s voice, Liam didn’t stir.

Seeing Dylan arrive, Eliana’s face paled with panic. Forcing a stiff smile, she tried to sound calm. “Dylan, you’re here. It’s nothing serious. I was out today, and Liam ended up eating too much fried chicken.”

Dylan bent down and gently picked up Liam. With careful movements, he began to lift the back of Liam’s shirt.

Eliana froze, cold sweat breaking out on her skin. She couldn’t tell whether Dylan had overheard the doctor’s earlier words.

“Dylan, after his nap today, Liam woke up and couldn’t find me. He was crying and looking for me, and he fell off the bed. I didn’t notice it at the time, but the doctor saw the bruise while checking his back just now.” Eliana forced herself to explain calmly. After all, Dylan had always trusted her. He believed whatever she said.

Sure enough, Dylan’s tense expression softened slightly at her words. “From now on, make sure the servants watch Liam around the clock. We can’t let an accident like this happen again.”

Both Eliana and Beatrice let out a quiet sigh of relief.

Beatrice smiled with practiced warmth. “Look at this child, holding onto you so tightly. You’ve barely been home this past month. He must have missed you terribly.”

Dylan held Liam close. Perhaps it was the bond of blood, but a sense of quiet calm settled in his chest. “Mom, I’ll try to come home earlier from now on to spend more time with Liam.” He knew he owed both Liam and Eliana.

Seeing Dylan’s unchanged trust in Eliana, Beatrice felt a weight lift from her shoulders. “It puts my heart at ease to see you treat Eliana well. She’s suffered so much for your sake. Always remember–your life was saved by her. You must cherish her and your son.”

Dylan’s lips pressed into a thin line. Over the years, Beatrice had never missed a chance to remind him Eliana had saved his life.
