Serena ignored their bickering. Her attention remained fixed on Liam, who was still wailing pitifully. Her heart ached for

him.

Walking up to Dylan, she said quietly, “He wants me to hold him. If you allow it, let me comfort him.” Whatever grievances existed between the adults, the child was innocent. Serena couldn’t bear to see him cry so desperately.

But Eliana swiftly stepped in front of Serena, blocking her way. “Stella, don’t you dare touch my child,” she sneered, “I know you have been unwell since you lost your own baby. You’ve terrified my son. That’s why he cries the moment he sees you. You should stay away. Don’t come near him again.”

Serena’s face went completely blank as Eliana’s cruel words struck her deepest wound. A sharp, searing pain shot through her heart, leaving her momentarily hollow. After my child was gone, did I become unwell?‘ she wondered.

‘No, that’s not it.‘ Serena denied her own thought in his heart inside. ‘I just miss my poor baby. I ache for him. He was born healthy, alive in my arms. Why did he leave so suddenly?‘

“Mommy, hold me.” Liam’s sobs had weakened into exhausted whimpers, his teary eyes fixed pleadingly on Serena.

Dylan’s brow remained furrowed. “Eliana, can’t you see he’s about to make himself sick from crying? He needs to be comforted.” Ignoring Eliana’s protest, he stepped aside and gently handed the child to Serena.

Beatrice moved to intervene, but it was too late. She stood stiffly to the side, her brow tightly knitted. Inside, she seethed, ‘That useless Pierre. He couldn’t even manage to finish Stella off in that crash.’

The moment Liam was nestled in Serena’s arms, his crying stopped as if by magic. He nuzzled against her, his small hand clutching her shirt tightly, and looked up at her with an innocent, trusting smile.

“Mommy, don’t leave me behind,” he whispered, before closing his eyes wearily and drifting into a peaceful sleep against Serena’s chest.

Serena’s heart trembled. Staring down at the child who clung to her even in sleep, she couldn’t help but wonder, ‘Why does he cling to me like this? Why does he keep calling me Mommy?”

Eliana’s eyes widened in disbelief as she watched Liam settle so calmly in Serena’s arms.

Dylan watched quietly, struck by the gentle, tender way Serena held Liam, and by how beautiful she looked in that quiet

moment.

Spencer spoke up gently, “Stella, this little one really takes to you. The moment you hold him, he settles right aybe it’s the natural, calming fragrance you carry. It’s very soothing.”

who had been filled with doubt, gradually calmed at his words. She did have a subtle, innate scent that often brought fort to others.

Eliana shot a sharp look at Spencer, puzzled by his presence with Serena.

“Mind if I ask, Spencer,” Eliana began, her tone laced with pointed curiosity, “what are you doing with Stella? The two of you showing up together at this hour–what’s going on between you two?”

Eliana knew that Yvonne had been in love with Spencer for years. To get closer to him, Yvonne had even taken a job at his company, though she happened to be away on a business trip these past few days.

Dylan’s expression darkened, his thoughts circling back to Spencer’s earlier confession of liking Serena, But Serena had someone she liked too. He hadn’t found out whether it was Chris or not.

Spencer glanced at Eliana, a meaningful curl at the corner of his mouth. “Ms. Lambert, it is none of your concern. You’d do better to focus on yourself.”

Eliana’s face paled slightly. ‘Stella really moves fast, already clinging to Spencer right after the divorce, she thought bitterly, ‘If Yvonne finds out, with her fiery temper, she’ll make Stella’s life miserable. Then I won’t even need to lift a finger!
